Dr. Dimitra Papageorgiou

Dr. Dimitra Papageorgiou is a senior consultant psychiatrist at Eginition Hospital in Athens — the University of Athens' dedicated psychiatric university hospital, founded in 1904 and one of Greece's oldest and most distinguished psychiatric institutions. The hospital is the primary national academic referral centre for complex psychiatric conditions and is affiliated with the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens Medical School. With 17 years of clinical experience, she is among Greece's most accomplished psychiatrists.

Greece has faced significant mental health challenges over the past decade, including elevated rates of depression, anxiety, and suicidal ideation associated with the country's extended economic crisis. Dr. Papageorgiou has been at the forefront of evidence-based psychiatric care during this period, working within the public hospital system to provide accessible specialist psychiatric services while also contributing to research on the psychiatric impact of socioeconomic adversity.

She completed her PhD at the University of Athens with research on the neurobiological correlates of treatment-resistant depression and completed a research fellowship at King's College London's Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience — one of the world's leading psychiatric research institutions.

Dr. Papageorgiou completed her medical degree at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens Medical School — Greece's premier medical faculty. She undertook psychiatry residency at Eginition Hospital and obtained Greek specialist certification in psychiatry. Her PhD (University of Athens, 2013) focused on treatment-resistant depression and neuroimaging biomarkers. She completed a research fellowship at King's College London Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience (IoPPN), (2014–2015). She holds the European Psychiatric Association Certificate of European Continuing Medical Education in Psychiatry.

Dr. Papageorgiou's clinical expertise spans the breadth of adult psychiatry with particular depth in mood disorders and schizophrenia spectrum conditions. For depression, she manages treatment-resistant cases including clozapine augmentation, lithium augmentation, and coordinates electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) for severe or medication-refractory depression. For bipolar disorder, she manages acute mania, depression in bipolar disorder, and long-term mood stabilisation. For schizophrenia, she optimises antipsychotic regimens, monitors metabolic side effects, and supports community reintegration through collaborative care with social services.

She manages anxiety disorders (GAD, panic disorder, social anxiety, PTSD, OCD) with combined psychopharmacology and coordination with CBT therapists. She conducts capacity assessments, mental health act evaluations, and crisis assessments in the emergency liaison psychiatry context.

Dr. Papageorgiou consults in Greek, English, and French. Eginition Hospital serves Greek nationals and Athens' international and expatriate community including patients from Cyprus, the Balkans, and the Greek diaspora in the UK, Australia, Germany, and the USA.
