About Dr. Soumah
Dr. Ibrahima Soumah is a senior general surgeon at CHU Donka in Conakry, Guinea's most populous hospital and one of the two main surgical facilities serving the capital. Over a 20-year surgical career, Dr. Soumah has become one of the most experienced operating surgeons in Guinea, having performed thousands of operations across the full range of abdominal, traumatic, and tropical surgical conditions that define the workload of a general surgeon in West Africa. Guinea's surgical system faces profound challenges: there are very few trained surgeons relative to the country's population of 14 million, operating theatre infrastructure is intermittently functional due to power and supply disruptions, blood bank capacity is limited, and patients often present late with advanced disease because of delays in seeking or accessing care. Dr. Soumah has navigated these constraints throughout his career, developing the clinical judgment and technical adaptability required to manage complex surgical emergencies with whatever resources are available. Typhoid bowel perforation is among the most common emergency surgical presentations in Conakry, a direct consequence of the prevalence of enteric fever in a city where access to clean water and sanitation remains inadequate. He is also experienced in trauma surgery, goitre surgery for the iodine-deficiency thyroid disease endemic in parts of Guinea, and the management of necrotising soft tissue infections. He speaks French, Fula, and Susu, the latter being the predominant language of the coastal communities around Conakry.
Education & Training
Dr. Soumah completed his medical training at the Université Gamal Abdel Nasser de Conakry and undertook specialist surgical training through the DES programme in general surgery at CHU Donka, one of the two institutions offering postgraduate surgical training in Guinea. He also undertook a period of clinical surgical training in Morocco, where a number of Guinean surgeons have been supported through bilateral technical cooperation, gaining exposure to elective surgical volume and techniques beyond what is routinely available in Guinea. He returned to Conakry and has remained at CHU Donka, where he is now one of the most senior surgeons.
Clinical Expertise & Procedures
Dr. Soumah's surgical expertise covers the full range of emergency and elective general surgery required in the Guinean context. He performs laparotomy for typhoid bowel perforation with peritoneal toilet and bowel repair, appendicectomy, hernia repair, bowel resection for obstruction and colorectal disease, and colostomy when primary anastomosis is not safe. He performs thyroidectomy for benign goitre and suspected thyroid neoplasia and conducts wound debridement and management of necrotising fasciitis. His trauma surgery experience includes management of penetrating and blunt abdominal injuries from road traffic accidents and other causes, operating in conditions that may include intermittent theatre lighting, limited anaesthetic agents, and constrained blood product availability.
Research & Publications
Dr. Soumah has contributed surgical case data to studies on typhoid bowel perforation outcomes in Guinea coordinated through the Association des Chirurgiens d'Afrique Francophone and has participated in global surgery research activities assessing the burden of untreated surgical disease in West Africa. He has presented at national surgical meetings in Guinea and regional francophone African surgical conferences. His 20 years of surgical experience in a severely resource-limited environment constitutes a body of knowledge that he actively shares with younger surgeons in training at CHU Donka.
International Patient Services
Dr. Soumah provides surgical care for international NGO workers, researchers, and visitors to Conakry who require emergency or elective surgical attention during their time in Guinea. He communicates in French and is experienced in managing surgical care for international patients with limited local language skills. CHU Donka is one of the main facilities available for surgical intervention in Conakry. Surgical consultation enquiries should be directed to the hospital's surgical department.
Awards & Recognition
Dr. Soumah is a member of the Association des Chirurgiens d'Afrique Francophone and the Ordre National des Médecins de Guinée. He is recognised at CHU Donka as its most experienced general surgeon and is respected within Guinea's medical community for his sustained commitment to providing surgical care in one of the most challenging healthcare environments in West Africa. His two decades of practice represent an irreplaceable contribution to surgical capacity in Guinea.
