Dr. Jean-Robert Pierre

Dr. Jean-Robert Pierre is a consultant general surgeon at Hôpital Bernard Mevs in Port-au-Prince — one of Haiti's most capable private hospitals and the country's principal centre for trauma surgery and critical care. Known internationally for its emergency response during the 2010 earthquake and subsequent crises, Hôpital Bernard Mevs is supported by Project Medishare and other international partners, and maintains equipment and protocols that exceed the typical capacity of Haitian public facilities.

With 18 years of surgical experience in one of the Western Hemisphere's most challenging healthcare environments, Dr. Pierre has developed exceptional skills in damage control surgery and emergency general surgery. Haiti's elevated rates of trauma — from road traffic accidents, interpersonal violence, and natural disasters — combined with limited pre-hospital emergency systems mean that many patients arrive at Hôpital Bernard Mevs with delayed or complex injuries requiring skilled emergency surgical judgment under resource constraints.

Beyond trauma and emergency surgery, Dr. Pierre performs the full range of elective and semi-urgent general surgery procedures, including cholecystectomy for gallstones, hernia repair, appendicectomy, and colostomy formation and reversal. He trained in Paris and brings French surgical training standards to his Haitian practice.

He communicates in Haitian Creole, French, and English — essential capabilities for working in Haiti's multilingual clinical environment with international medical volunteers.

Dr. Pierre completed his Docteur en Médecine at the Faculté de Médecine et de Pharmacie, Université d'État d'Haïti in Port-au-Prince. He then undertook specialist surgical training in France, completing his Diplôme de Spécialisation en Chirurgie Générale and gaining comprehensive training in emergency and elective abdominal surgery at a French university hospital. He completed a Certificate in Damage Control Surgery through surgical education programmes provided by Partners In Health and international trauma organisations. He has participated in Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) training and Surgical Education and Self-Assessment Program (SESAP) modules. His French surgical training — combined with on-the-ground experience in Haiti's unique high-volume trauma environment — has given him a blend of technical rigour and practical adaptability uncommon among surgeons in the region.

Dr. Pierre's surgical expertise is shaped by Haiti's high-acuity, resource-limited environment. In emergency surgery, he performs emergency laparotomy for abdominal trauma, bowel perforation, and bowel obstruction, applying damage control surgery principles to the most critically injured patients. He performs emergency and elective appendicectomy, cholecystectomy (open, as laparoscopic equipment availability is limited), hernia repair (inguinal, umbilical, incisional), and colostomy formation and reversal for colorectal disease.

He manages penetrating abdominal trauma and blunt abdominal injury, performing damage control laparotomy with temporary packing, and coordinates post-operative intensive care within Hôpital Bernard Mevs's limited ICU capacity. He manages complex wounds including debridement of infected wounds, skin grafting, and management of necrotising soft tissue infections.

Hôpital Bernard Mevs is supported by international partners including Project Medishare and has significant experience working with NGO staff, UN personnel, and international visitors. Dr. Pierre consults in Haitian Creole, French, and English. For Haitian diaspora returning to Port-au-Prince for surgical treatment — particularly for conditions such as gallstones, hernias, or elective colorectal surgery — the hospital offers a materially higher level of surgical care than most public facilities, with a dedicated international coordination unit providing support with documentation, insurance, and pre-operative communication. Complex cases requiring advanced imaging not available in Haiti, or post-surgical follow-up outside the country, can be coordinated through established referral pathways with hospitals in the Dominican Republic, the United States, or Canada.

Dr. Pierre has been recognised by the Société Haïtienne de Chirurgie for his sustained contributions to surgical care in Port-au-Prince and for his emergency surgical response following Haiti's major seismic events. He received a commendation from Project Medishare for his leadership in surgical training programmes for Haitian surgical residents at Hôpital Bernard Mevs. As one of Haiti's senior general surgeons maintaining practice through successive humanitarian crises — including the 2010 earthquake, cholera epidemic, and subsequent political instability — Dr. Pierre's professional dedication has been acknowledged by international surgical organisations and NGO partners who work within Haiti's health system.
