Dr. Marie-Claude Pierre

Dr. Marie-Claude Pierre is one of a small number of trained endocrinologists practising in Haiti, working at the Hôpital de l'Université d'État d'Haïti (HUEH) in Port-au-Prince, the country's leading public university hospital. Haiti has significant unmet endocrinology needs — diabetes and thyroid disease are prevalent, yet specialist access is extremely limited. Dr. Pierre has spent 10 years building endocrinology services at HUEH, managing patients with type 2 diabetes, hypothyroidism, hyperthyroidism, and associated complications. She works in collaboration with international health organisations to improve access to insulin and thyroid medications for Haitian patients. She communicates in Haitian Creole, French, and English.

Dr. Pierre completed her Doctorat en Médecine at Université d'État d'Haïti (UEH), the country's principal public university. She obtained a DES in Endocrinologie through a cooperative programme with French medical institutions, which was possible through partnerships between Haitian and French medical schools. She maintains membership in the Société Francophone du Diabète (SFD) and has participated in regional training workshops in diabetes management organised by international health partners working in Haiti, including Partners in Health.

Dr. Pierre's clinical expertise focuses on diabetes mellitus management and thyroid disorders, the most prevalent endocrine conditions in Haiti. She initiates insulin therapy and manages oral hypoglycaemic agents, monitors and manages diabetic complications including neuropathy, nephropathy, and retinopathy (in coordination with ophthalmology), and provides nutritional counselling adapted to Haitian dietary patterns. She assesses and manages thyroid dysfunction and provides thyroid ultrasound interpretation. Her practice operates within the resource constraints of the Haitian healthcare system.

Dr. Pierre consults in Haitian Creole, French, and English. International workers, journalists, diplomats, and medical volunteers based in Port-au-Prince can access endocrinology consultation through HUEH. Haiti's medical infrastructure is severely strained, and international patients requiring complex endocrinology care beyond basic management are typically referred to hospitals in the Dominican Republic or the United States. Dr. Pierre provides foundational assessment and management and facilitates overseas referrals where needed.

Dr. Pierre has been recognised by the Société Haïtienne de Médecine Interne for her commitment to endocrinology service development in Haiti. Her dedication to maintaining specialist care in one of the world's most challenging healthcare environments — including the aftermath of the 2010 earthquake and subsequent crises — represents an extraordinary professional achievement. She has received commendation from international health partners including Partners in Health for her collaboration in diabetes care programmes.
