Dr. Ali Hosseini

Dr. Ali Hosseini is a senior cardiac surgeon at Tehran Heart Center — Iran's premier dedicated cardiac institution affiliated with Tehran University of Medical Sciences (TUMS). Tehran Heart Center performs one of the highest volumes of cardiac surgery in the Middle East, and Dr. Hosseini is among the institution's most experienced surgeons, having performed over 5,000 open heart procedures during his 24-year career.

Iran has developed a strong cardiac surgery tradition despite international sanctions that have complicated equipment and drug procurement. Iranian cardiac surgeons like Dr. Hosseini have demonstrated exceptional technical adaptability, maintaining high-volume, high-quality surgical programs under resource constraints. His expertise in off-pump coronary artery bypass grafting (OPCAB) — a technically demanding approach that avoids cardiopulmonary bypass — is particularly well-developed, as it reduces the need for some supplies while offering potential benefits in terms of reducing postoperative complications in high-risk patients.

Dr. Hosseini is also a recognized authority in valvular surgery, performing both mechanical and bioprosthetic aortic and mitral valve replacement, and increasingly complex mitral valve repair procedures. He collaborates with the Tehran Heart Center interventional cardiology team for hybrid coronary revascularization approaches.

He trained in Europe and holds the FETCS (Fellow of the European Board for Cardio-Thoracic Surgery) designation, reflecting training to European standards. He communicates in Farsi and English.

Dr. Hosseini obtained his MD from Tehran University of Medical Sciences (TUMS) and completed General Surgery residency at Shariati Hospital in Tehran. He undertook Cardiac Surgery training at TUMS and completed a Cardiac Surgery Fellowship at the Royal Brompton Hospital in London, UK — one of Europe's leading cardiac surgery centers. He holds a PhD in Cardiovascular Surgery from TUMS and the FETCS (Fellow of the European Board for Cardio-Thoracic Surgery) designation. He is a Professor of Cardiac Surgery at Tehran University of Medical Sciences.

Dr. Hosseini performs the full spectrum of adult cardiac surgery. In coronary surgery, he performs conventional on-pump CABG and off-pump (OPCAB) CABG, using arterial grafts (internal mammary artery, radial artery) as preferred conduits for optimal long-term patency. In valvular surgery, he performs aortic valve replacement with mechanical and bioprosthetic valves, Ross procedure for younger patients, and a comprehensive mitral surgery program including posterior leaflet repair, ring annuloplasty, and leaflet resection/augmentation techniques for mitral regurgitation. He performs aortic root and ascending aorta surgery for aneurysmal and dissection disease. He also manages endocarditis requiring surgical valve replacement and redo sternotomy procedures.

Dr. Hosseini has published in the Journal of Cardiac Surgery, Interactive Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery, and the Archives of Iranian Medicine on OPCAB outcomes, mitral valve repair techniques, and cardiac surgery outcomes at Tehran Heart Center. He participates in the EACTS registry and international cardiac surgery quality improvement initiatives. He is a faculty member at the Iranian Society of Cardiac Surgeons annual congress and serves as a reviewer for regional cardiac surgery journals.

Tehran Heart Center has historically received cardiac surgical referrals from neighboring countries including Afghanistan, Iraq, and Central Asian nations where cardiac surgery capacity is limited. Dr. Hosseini is experienced coordinating with international patients and consulting in both Farsi and English. Given current international travel and visa considerations, video pre-surgical consultations are particularly valuable for evaluating whether surgery is indicated and planning for the admission process.

Dr. Hosseini is the recipient of the Iranian Society of Cardiac Surgeons Clinical Excellence Award and has been recognized by Tehran University of Medical Sciences for his surgical volume and training contributions. He serves as Vice President of the Iranian Society of Cardiac Surgeons and is a faculty member at international cardiac surgery training workshops.
