Dr. Maryam Hosseini

Dr. Maryam Hosseini is a senior consultant in gastroenterology and internal medicine at Shariati Hospital in Tehran — one of Tehran University of Medical Sciences' (TUMS) major affiliated teaching hospitals and a key national referral centre for gastroenterological and hepatic conditions. With 20 years of clinical experience, she is among Iran's most experienced gastroenterologists.

Iran has distinctive gastroenterological disease patterns: the country has a high burden of hepatitis B and C infection (particularly in older cohorts before widespread vaccination), significant rates of upper GI malignancy — particularly gastric cancer in some provinces — and a growing burden of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) as diet and lifestyle have Westernised. For IBD management, she prescribes and monitors biological therapies including anti-TNF agents (infliximab, adalimumab) and vedolizumab, manages steroid tapering, and coordinates multidisciplinary IBD care with colorectal surgery.

In hepatology, she manages chronic hepatitis B and C, including direct-acting antiviral (DAA) therapy for hepatitis C, liver cirrhosis management including variceal screening, ascites management, and hepatic encephalopathy.
