Dr. Omar Khalil Ibrahim

Dr. Omar Khalil Ibrahim is a senior consultant general and trauma surgeon at Ghazi Al Hariri Hospital for Surgical Specialties in Baghdad — one of Iraq's principal surgical hospitals. Over 18 years of surgical practice, Dr. Ibrahim has developed exceptional operative skills under demanding conditions, managing high volumes of both elective and emergency cases including the trauma surgical caseload that reflects Iraq's ongoing security challenges.

His trauma surgery experience is extensive: he has managed penetrating and blunt abdominal trauma, thoracic injuries requiring surgical intervention, vascular injuries, and the complex multi-system trauma that defines damage control surgery. This experience has sharpened his decision-making in resource-constrained emergencies, a skill set that places him among the most resilient and adaptable surgeons in the region.

In elective general surgery, Dr. Ibrahim performs laparoscopic cholecystectomy, appendectomy, hernia repair (both open and laparoscopic), and bowel resection for obstruction and malignancy. He applies minimally invasive principles wherever the case allows, recognizing the benefits in recovery time and complication reduction for patients who may have limited access to postoperative care.

Dr. Ibrahim trains surgical residents at Ghazi Al Hariri Hospital and has mentored numerous Iraqi surgeons who have gone on to senior positions in the country's surgical workforce. He communicates in Arabic and English.

Dr. Ibrahim obtained his MBChB from Al Nahrain University College of Medicine in Baghdad and completed his General Surgery residency at Ghazi Al Hariri Hospital. He earned the FICMS (Fellowship of the Iraqi Commission for Medical Specializations) in General Surgery and subsequently completed a surgical training attachment at the Royal College of Surgeons in Edinburgh, obtaining the FRCS (Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons) designation. He completed advanced laparoscopic surgery training through Iraqi-European surgical exchange programs.

Dr. Ibrahim's surgical expertise spans emergency and elective abdominal surgery. In trauma, he performs exploratory laparotomy, damage control surgery, bowel injury repair, splenectomy, hepatorrhaphy, and management of vascular injuries within the abdomen. In elective surgery, he performs laparoscopic and open cholecystectomy, laparoscopic appendectomy, inguinal and incisional hernia repair with mesh, bowel resection with anastomosis for obstruction, malignancy, and inflammatory bowel disease complications. He performs esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD) for upper GI bleeding assessment in coordination with gastroenterology colleagues. He manages abdominal wall reconstruction and surgical site infection management.

Dr. Ibrahim has published in the Iraqi Journal of Medical Sciences and the Journal of the Faculty of Medicine Baghdad on trauma surgery outcomes, laparoscopic cholecystectomy in the Iraqi context, and surgical education. He participates in the Iraqi Society of Surgeons and contributes to the development of surgical training standards in Iraq in collaboration with the Iraqi Board for Medical Specializations.

Ghazi Al Hariri Hospital serves a primarily Iraqi domestic population. Dr. Ibrahim consults in Arabic and is conversational in English. He offers video consultations for second opinions on surgical indications — particularly for hernia, gallbladder, and abdominal conditions — for Iraqis abroad considering whether to return to Baghdad for surgery or seek care locally. He provides clear assessment reports and operative planning information for patients and their families.

Dr. Ibrahim has been recognized by the Iraqi Society of Surgeons for his contributions to surgical training and for his service during periods of national crisis.
