Dr. Siobhán Murphy

Dr. Siobhán Murphy is a consultant respiratory physician at St. Vincent's University Hospital (SVUH) in Dublin — one of Ireland's leading university-affiliated hospitals and a major national referral centre for complex respiratory conditions. St. Vincent's is one of a small number of designated adult cystic fibrosis (CF) centres in Ireland and is recognized for its advanced respiratory medicine services, operating in close academic partnership with University College Dublin (UCD). With 18 years of clinical experience, she is among Ireland's most respected respiratory physicians.

Ireland has a particularly high prevalence of cystic fibrosis globally — the highest CF carrier rate in the world — and adult CF care is a defining feature of Irish respiratory medicine. Dr. Murphy contributes to the adult CF multidisciplinary team at St. Vincent's, managing the complex respiratory, nutritional, and psychosocial needs of adult CF patients, including those eligible for CFTR modulator therapy (elexacaftor/tezacaftor/ivacaftor).

She completed her MRCPI and FRCP and undertook advanced respiratory medicine fellowship training in the UK and Canada before returning to Ireland. She is a member of the Irish Thoracic Society and the European Respiratory Society.

Dr. Murphy completed her medical degree at University College Dublin (UCD) School of Medicine. She undertook internal medicine and respiratory medicine training in Dublin hospitals and obtained Membership of the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland (MRCPI) and Fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians (FRCP, UK). She completed a respiratory research and clinical fellowship at the University of Toronto, Toronto General Hospital — one of North America's leading respiratory centres and a world-renowned site for interstitial lung disease and transplant medicine. She is a member of the Irish Thoracic Society, the European Respiratory Society (ERS), and the British Thoracic Society (BTS). Her Toronto fellowship gave her exposure to cutting-edge ILD and pulmonary hypertension management that is reflected in her current clinical practice at St. Vincent's.

Dr. Murphy's clinical expertise spans the full breadth of adult respiratory medicine with distinctive depth in cystic fibrosis. In CF, she participates in the adult CF multidisciplinary team, managing pulmonary exacerbations, elexacaftor/tezacaftor/ivacaftor (ETI) initiation and monitoring, sputum microbiology management (including Pseudomonas, MRSA, and Burkholderia), and lung function monitoring. She coordinates with CF physiotherapists, dietitians, and psychologists.

For COPD, she applies GOLD guideline pharmacological management and provides home oxygen and NIV assessment. For severe asthma, she phenotypes using FeNO and eosinophil count and prescribes biologic therapy (mepolizumab, dupilumab). For pulmonary fibrosis (IPF), she participates in multidisciplinary ILD case conferences and manages antifibrotic therapy. She performs bronchoscopy, EBUS, and thoracentesis.

Dr. Murphy consults in English at St. Vincent's University Hospital, which serves Irish nationals and a significant international and expatriate community in Dublin. Ireland's position as a European hub for multinational corporations means a large number of non-Irish EU and non-EU residents require specialist respiratory services in English. Video consultations for second opinions are available for patients outside Ireland, including the Irish diaspora in the UK, USA, and Australia. Dr. Murphy received the Irish Thoracic Society Young Investigator Award in 2016. She has published over 40 peer-reviewed articles in Thorax, the European Respiratory Journal, and Irish medical journals. She has been an invited speaker at the Irish Thoracic Society Winter Scientific Meeting and the British Thoracic Society Winter Meeting. She serves on the Irish Thoracic Society education committee and was appointed Associate Editor for the Irish Medical Journal's pulmonology section. She received the UCD School of Medicine Excellence in Clinical Teaching Award for her contributions to undergraduate and postgraduate respiratory medicine education.
