Dr. Adjoua Koffi

Dr. Adjoua Koffi is a senior obstetrician-gynaecologist at the Centre Hospitalier Universitaire (CHU) de Yopougon, one of Abidjan's two major academic teaching hospitals and the institution serving the city's densely populated western communes. With 16 years of specialist experience, Dr. Koffi manages one of the most demanding obstetric and gynaecological caseloads in Ivory Coast, given that the CHU de Yopougon is the referral centre for the Yopougon, Attécoubé, and Songon districts — home to over 2 million residents. Her clinical practice spans the full range of women's healthcare, from managing complex high-risk pregnancies and obstetric emergencies to screening for cervical cancer, treating endometriosis, and managing infertility. Dr. Koffi is particularly recognised for her work in cervical cancer awareness and screening, having established colposcopy services at the CHU de Yopougon and partnering with national health authorities on HPV awareness campaigns. She is committed to reducing Ivory Coast's high cervical cancer mortality rate through early detection and affordable local treatment options. She is also a clinical supervisor for medical students and residents from the Université Félix Houphouët-Boigny attached to the CHU de Yopougon.

Dr. Koffi earned her Doctorat en Médecine at the Université Félix Houphouët-Boigny in Abidjan. She completed her specialist residency in gynaecology and obstetrics at the CHU de Cocody, obtaining her Diplôme d'Études Spécialisées (DES) en Gynécologie-Obstétrique. She subsequently undertook advanced laparoscopic surgery training at the Hôpital Lariboisière in Paris, France, through an exchange programme facilitated by the Société Française de Gynécologie. She has attended FIGO-accredited workshops in gynaecological oncology screening and has received training in safe abortion care under the auspices of Ipas Africa Alliance.

Dr. Koffi's obstetric expertise focuses on managing complicated pregnancies, including gestational diabetes, pre-eclampsia, multiple gestations, and pregnancies complicated by anaemia or HIV. She is proficient in caesarean section, operative vaginal delivery, and management of life-threatening obstetric emergencies including post-partum haemorrhage and uterine rupture. In gynaecology, she is skilled in laparoscopic procedures for endometriosis, ovarian cysts, and ectopic pregnancy, as well as hysteroscopy for intrauterine pathology. Her colposcopy and cervical biopsy skills underpin the CHU de Yopougon's cervical cancer screening programme, which she has helped grow to serve thousands of women annually.

Dr. Koffi has published research in the Journal de Gynécologie Obstétrique et Biologie de la Reproduction on the epidemiology of cervical cancer in Abidjan and on maternal outcomes in HIV-positive pregnant women in Ivory Coast. She contributed to a multi-centre study on pre-eclampsia management in West African teaching hospitals and has presented her cervical cancer screening programme outcomes at the SIGO national congress.

Dr. Koffi consults in French and Dioula, enabling communication with patients from across Ivory Coast and the broader West African Francophone region. She welcomes patients from the Ivorian diaspora in France, the United States, and Canada who return home for gynaecological care or maternity services. For patients requiring care beyond the capacity of the CHU de Yopougon — such as complex oncological gynaecology — she facilitates referrals to partner institutions in France and provides comprehensive medical documentation for seamless continuity of care abroad.

Dr. Koffi was recognised by the Société Ivoirienne de Gynécologie-Obstétrique for excellence in clinical service and for her leadership in establishing cervical cancer screening capacity at CHU de Yopougon. She received an award from the Ivorian Ministry of Health for her contributions to the national women's health programme and was selected as an FIGO regional ambassador for sub-Saharan Africa in cervical cancer prevention.
