Dr. Kouamé Djé

Dr. Kouamé Djé is a leading cardiologist at the Centre Hospitalier Universitaire (CHU) de Cocody in Abidjan, Ivory Coast's foremost academic medical institution. With over 20 years of specialist practice, Dr. Djé has established himself as one of West Africa's most experienced interventional cardiologists, at a time when cardiovascular disease is rising rapidly across the continent as a result of urbanisation, changing diets, and ageing populations. The CHU de Cocody hosts one of the few cardiac catheterisation laboratories in Francophone West Africa, and Dr. Djé has been central to building its capacity for coronary interventions. His clinical practice encompasses the full spectrum of cardiac disease — from managing patients presenting with acute myocardial infarctions and cardiogenic shock to the outpatient management of heart failure, hypertensive heart disease, and atrial fibrillation. Dr. Djé is also a professor of cardiology at the Université Félix Houphouët-Boigny, where he supervises postgraduate medical residents and contributes to advancing cardiovascular medical training in Ivory Coast. His trilingual ability enables him to communicate with patients from across Ivory Coast's diverse linguistic landscape, and he is known for his patient-centred consultations that bridge clinical expertise with cultural sensitivity.

Dr. Djé completed his Doctorat en Médecine at the Université Félix Houphouët-Boigny in Abidjan. He pursued specialist training in cardiology through a competitive inter-African residency programme at the CHU de Dakar, Senegal, earning his Diplôme d'Études Spécialisées (DES) en Cardiologie. He subsequently obtained an advanced certificate in interventional cardiology through a fellowship programme at the Institut Cardiovasculaire Paris Sud, France, one of Europe's leading centres for percutaneous coronary intervention. He has attended advanced training programmes hosted by the Pan African Society of Cardiology and remains an active member of the Société Française de Cardiologie's international network.

Dr. Djé's primary technical expertise is in interventional cardiology. He performs coronary angiography and percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) for acute and chronic coronary syndromes, and has experience with primary PCI for STEMI — a high-stakes procedure requiring rapid coordination that is available at very few centres in West Africa. He is proficient in transthoracic and transoesophageal echocardiography, pacemaker implantation, and pharmacological and device management of atrial fibrillation. In heart failure, he applies current ESC guidelines adapted to the Ivorian context, managing patients with systolic and diastolic dysfunction across the full severity spectrum.

Dr. Djé has published research in the Pan African Medical Journal and the Cardiovascular Journal of Africa on topics including the epidemiology of hypertensive heart disease in urban Abidjan, outcomes of primary PCI in West African patients, and the burden of rheumatic heart disease in Ivorian adolescents. He is a principal investigator for Ivory Coast in PASCAR's multinational THEZA cardiovascular risk study and has presented at the African Society of Cardiology Congress multiple times.

Dr. Djé consults in French, Dioula, and Baoulé, covering the two major trade languages of Ivory Coast as well as the country's largest single indigenous language. Dr. Djé received the Prix d'Excellence en Cardiologie from the Société Ivoirienne de Cardiologie in recognition of his contributions to cardiovascular medicine in Ivory Coast. He was honoured by the Université Félix Houphouët-Boigny for outstanding teaching in medicine and was selected as a PASCAR Young Investigator Award recipient earlier in his career for his research on atrial fibrillation prevalence in sub-Saharan African populations.
