Dr. Winston Campbell-Brown

Dr. Winston Campbell-Brown is one of Jamaica's most experienced consultant cardiologists, based at the University Hospital of the West Indies (UHWI) in Kingston — the primary academic medical centre affiliated with the UWI Mona campus. With more than two decades of clinical practice, he has become a trusted authority on cardiovascular disease in the Caribbean context, where hypertension and heart failure carry a disproportionate burden relative to the wider population.

Dr. Campbell-Brown completed his medical training at the University of the West Indies, Mona, before undertaking postgraduate specialist training in the United Kingdom, where he earned Membership of the Royal College of Physicians (MRCP). He returned to Jamaica to build his career at UHWI, contributing to both patient care and the clinical training of junior physicians and medical students.

His clinical focus extends across preventive cardiology, non-invasive diagnostics, and the long-term management of chronic cardiovascular conditions. He works closely with patients managing multiple risk factors — including diabetes, obesity, and dyslipidaemia — that are highly prevalent in Jamaica and the wider Caribbean.

Dr. Campbell-Brown completed his undergraduate medical degree at the University of the West Indies, Mona, one of the leading medical schools in the English-speaking Caribbean. He subsequently undertook higher specialist training in internal medicine and cardiology in the United Kingdom, culminating in the award of Membership of the Royal College of Physicians (MRCP).

On returning to Jamaica, he completed specialist cardiology training and has continued professional development through membership of the Caribbean Heart Association and participation in regional and international cardiology conferences. His training equips him with expertise in both non-invasive cardiac diagnostics and the comprehensive management of complex cardiac conditions across a full spectrum of patient populations.

Dr. Campbell-Brown provides comprehensive cardiology services at the University Hospital of the West Indies, with particular strength in echocardiography and functional cardiac assessment. He performs and interprets echocardiograms, cardiac stress tests, and Holter monitoring for arrhythmia detection, as well as coronary angiography for patients with suspected or confirmed coronary artery disease.

He has developed a particular clinical interest in heart failure management and cardiac rehabilitation — areas of significant need given the high prevalence of hypertensive heart disease in Jamaica. His rehabilitation programmes are structured to support patients in returning to active, productive lives following cardiac events. He also manages complex presentations including atrial fibrillation, cardiomyopathy, and multi-vessel coronary disease in collaboration with regional surgical teams when intervention is required.

Dr. Campbell-Brown has been engaged in clinical research addressing cardiovascular risk in Caribbean populations, with a focus on hypertension epidemiology and heart failure outcomes in Jamaica. He has contributed to clinical discussions at regional symposia and has collaborated with UWI faculty on cardiovascular health initiatives aimed at raising awareness of preventable cardiac risk factors in the Jamaican community.

His work contributes to an emerging body of evidence on the specific cardiovascular disease burden faced by populations of African descent in the Caribbean, where risk profiles, medication responses, and social determinants of health differ meaningfully from data derived from predominantly European cohorts.

Dr. Campbell-Brown sees patients from across the Caribbean and the Jamaican diaspora in North America and the United Kingdom who travel to Kingston for specialist cardiac assessment. The University Hospital of the West Indies is well-equipped for comprehensive cardiac diagnostics and offers internationally trained physicians at costs significantly lower than in the United States, Canada, or the UK.

For international patients, consultations can be arranged in person at UHWI or, for initial assessment and follow-up, via video consultation. Patients travelling from overseas are advised to bring prior ECG reports, echocardiogram images, and medication lists to facilitate efficient consultation and avoid duplication of investigations.
