Dr. Teiraoi Baraniko

Dr. Teiraoi Baraniko is a general practitioner with a focused interest in musculoskeletal and non-communicable disease at Tungaru Central Hospital in South Tarawa — Kiribati's main referral hospital. In a Pacific island nation with one of the world's highest rates of gout, diabetes, and obesity, Dr. Baraniko's practice is heavily focused on these interconnected conditions. He attends APLAR and Pacific Health Association congresses to maintain skills in musculoskeletal medicine. He receives regular supervision from visiting rheumatologists who travel to Kiribati through Pacific medical outreach programmes.

Dr. Baraniko's clinical expertise is shaped by Kiribati's disease profile. Gout management — including acute gout attack treatment, urate-lowering therapy initiation, and dietary counselling — is his most practised area. He performs joint aspiration for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes in acute gout flares. He manages osteoarthritis of the knee and hip, prescribing physiotherapy, analgesic regimens, and intra-articular injections where feasible. Diabetes-related musculoskeletal complications including diabetic neuropathy affecting mobility and Charcot joint disease are part of his practice.
