Dr. Ardian Berisha

Dr. Ardian Berisha is a cardiologist at the University Clinical Centre of Kosovo (UCCK) in Pristina, Kosovo's largest hospital and the country's primary tertiary care institution. With 15 years of clinical experience, he is among Kosovo's most experienced cardiologists.

Kosovo has a young healthcare system following its independence in 2008, and the UCCK has worked to develop specialist services including cardiology. Dr. Berisha has been a key contributor to building cardiology services and training at the UCCK.

Many of Kosovo's specialist physicians have pursued training abroad. Dr. Berisha completed cardiology training at the University Hospital Center Mother Teresa in Tirana, Albania, and undertook an echocardiography fellowship at the University Hospital of Lausanne (CHUV) in Switzerland. His training abroad has given him exposure to both regional and Western European cardiology standards.

He is a member of the ESC and participates in regional Balkan cardiology educational networks. He is known for his dedication to improving cardiac care in Kosovo and for his patient-accessible communication style.

Dr. Berisha received his MD from the University of Pristina Faculty of Medicine in 2006. He completed his cardiology residency training partly at the UCCK and partly at the University Hospital Center Mother Teresa in Tirana, Albania (2010–2011). He undertook an echocardiography fellowship at the University Hospital of Lausanne (CHUV), Switzerland (2015). His PhD from the University of Pristina in 2014 focused on left ventricular hypertrophy and cardiovascular risk in hypertensive patients. He is a member of the European Society of Cardiology. His Lausanne fellowship at CHUV — one of Switzerland's premier academic hospitals — gave him advanced echocardiography training that he brought back to Kosovo, establishing a more comprehensive cardiac imaging service at the UCCK.

Dr. Berisha specializes in non-invasive cardiology with expertise in echocardiography including 2D, Doppler, strain imaging, and stress echocardiography. He performs comprehensive cardiac evaluations including Holter monitoring, exercise stress testing, and ambulatory blood pressure monitoring. He manages coronary artery disease, heart failure, hypertension, valvular heart disease, and atrial fibrillation in both outpatient and inpatient settings. He coordinates with interventional colleagues for patients requiring coronary angiography and revascularisation. He also performs transesophageal echocardiography for assessment of valvular pathology, cardiac source of embolism evaluation, and pre-cardioversion atrial thrombus exclusion. He participates in the UCCK heart failure clinic providing optimisation of guideline-directed medical therapy.

Dr. Berisha has published over 10 peer-reviewed articles in Albanian and international cardiology journals. His research focuses on hypertension and cardiovascular risk in the Kosovo population, echocardiographic assessment of valvular heart disease, and atrial fibrillation epidemiology. He collaborates with cardiologists in Albania and Switzerland and participates in Balkan cardiology research networks.

Dr. Berisha speaks Albanian and English and sees patients from the Kosovo diaspora and from neighbouring Albania and North Macedonia. The UCCK coordinates international patient consultations and can provide medical reports in English for insurance and second-opinion purposes. Video consultations are available for diaspora patients in Switzerland, Germany, Sweden, and the UK who require cardiological advice remotely. Kosovo's geographic position in the Western Balkans and its growing health sector make it an accessible option for patients from the Albanian-speaking diaspora worldwide. Diaspora patients frequently return to Kosovo for private specialist cardiology consultations at significantly lower cost than in Western Europe.

Dr. Berisha received the Kosovo Society of Cardiology Award for Clinical Excellence in 2019. He was recognized by the UCCK for his contributions to developing echocardiography services at Kosovo's national hospital, establishing the echocardiography laboratory as a centre for cardiac imaging training. He has received commendations for his role in training the next generation of Kosovar cardiologists and has been an invited speaker at the Balkan Cardiology Congress. He participates in the ESC Central and Eastern European network and has been recognised by the ESC for his contributions to cardiovascular medicine in post-conflict Kosovo.
