Dr. Shpend Hasani

Dr. Shpend Hasani is an internist and endocrinologist at the University Clinical Centre of Kosovo (UCCK) in Pristina. With 14 years of clinical experience, he has developed particular expertise in diabetes management and thyroid disease — conditions with high prevalence in the Kosovo population.

Dr. Hasani completed a Master of Science in endocrinology and metabolism at the University of Vienna in Austria, gaining exposure to European approaches to diabetes and thyroid management. He returned to Kosovo where he established a structured diabetes management clinic at the UCCK.

He is an active member of the European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD) and works to implement international diabetes management guidelines in Kosovo's primary and secondary healthcare settings. He is committed to patient education as a cornerstone of effective diabetes management.

Dr. Hasani regularly provides continuing medical education to Kosovo's primary care physicians on diabetes prevention, early diagnosis, and management — a critical role in a country with growing rates of type 2 diabetes related to dietary and lifestyle changes.

Dr. Hasani obtained his MD from the University of Pristina Faculty of Medicine in 2007. He completed his internal medicine residency at the UCCK and undertook an MSc in Endocrinology and Metabolism at the Medical University of Vienna, Austria (2012–2013) — one of Central Europe's foremost endocrinology training centres. He is a member of the European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD) and is certified by the Ministry of Health of Kosovo in internal medicine. His Vienna MSc provided advanced training in diabetes technology — including insulin pumps and continuous glucose monitoring — and in the management of complex thyroid and adrenal disorders that he has applied to building the UCCK's structured endocrinology clinic.

Dr. Hasani specializes in endocrinology and metabolic medicine. In diabetes, he manages type 1 and type 2 diabetes including insulin therapy optimisation, GLP-1 receptor agonist and SGLT-2 inhibitor prescribing, and continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) interpretation. He treats thyroid disorders including hypothyroidism, hyperthyroidism (Graves' disease), thyroid nodule evaluation with ultrasound and fine needle aspiration guidance, and differentiated thyroid cancer follow-up. He manages obesity and metabolic syndrome, polycystic ovary syndrome, and adrenal disorders including Cushing's syndrome and primary hyperaldosteronism. He also manages general internal medicine conditions across inpatient and outpatient settings at UCCK. He leads the UCCK diabetes technology clinic, which supports patients with insulin pumps and continuous glucose monitoring system interpretation.

Dr. Hasani has published over 8 peer-reviewed articles in Albanian and international internal medicine journals. His research focuses on diabetes prevalence and management in Kosovo, thyroid disease epidemiology, and the effectiveness of patient education programs in glycemic control. He collaborates with endocrinologists in Austria and participates in EASD educational programs.

Dr. Hasani speaks Albanian and English and provides consultations for diaspora patients returning to Kosovo and for international patients seeking endocrinology consultations. Video consultations are available for remote management of diabetes and thyroid conditions — particularly useful for diaspora patients in Germany, Switzerland, Sweden, and the UK who have difficulty accessing Albanian-speaking endocrinologists in their countries of residence. He has particular experience assisting diaspora patients in transitioning from foreign healthcare systems to continued management in Kosovo, including medication substitution guidance when specific branded drugs are not available in Kosovo. He also provides written clinical summaries in English for diaspora patients to share with their home-country endocrinologists, ensuring continuity of care when patients travel between Kosovo and Western Europe.

Dr. Hasani received the Kosovo Medical Association Award for contribution to diabetes care development in 2018. He was recognized by the UCCK for establishing the structured diabetes management clinic — the first systematic diabetes follow-up programme at Kosovo's national hospital — and for his leadership in continuing medical education for primary care physicians on diabetes management. He received the EASD Young Diabetologist Award for his early-career work on diabetes prevalence and glycaemic control in the Kosovar population. He has been invited as a faculty speaker at EASD annual congresses on diabetes management in post-conflict Southeastern European populations.
