Dr. Abdulla Al Shammari

Dr. Abdulla Al Shammari is a senior consultant neurosurgeon at Ibn Sina Hospital in Kuwait City — Kuwait's principal tertiary care hospital and the country's main neurosurgery center. With 22 years of neurosurgical practice, Dr. Al Shammari leads one of the most experienced neurosurgery teams in the Gulf, performing a high volume of cranial and spinal procedures annually.

His cranial surgery practice encompasses the resection of primary and metastatic brain tumors, skull base surgery for meningiomas and acoustic neuromas, microsurgical procedures for trigeminal neuralgia (microvascular decompression), and emergency surgery for traumatic brain injury, acute subdural hematoma, and intracerebral hemorrhage. He uses neuronavigation, intraoperative MRI, and fluorescence-guided surgery (5-ALA) for brain tumor resection where applicable.

In spinal surgery, Dr. Al Shammari performs cervical and lumbar decompression, instrumented spinal fusion, intradural tumor resection, and correction of adult spinal deformity. He uses intraoperative neuromonitoring as standard for high-risk spinal procedures.

His hydrocephalus practice includes ventriculoperitoneal shunt insertion, shunt revision, and endoscopic third ventriculostomy for obstructive hydrocephalus. He completed a Skull Base Surgery Fellowship at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center — one of the world's leading centers for skull base neurosurgery. He holds the WFNS certification and is a member of the Congress of Neurological Surgeons.

Dr. Al Shammari's neurosurgical expertise is comprehensive. In cranial surgery, he uses neuronavigation, intraoperative ultrasound, and 5-ALA fluorescence for glioma surgery; performs skull base approaches (retrosigmoid, pterional, orbitozygomatic) for meningiomas, acoustic neuromas, and pituitary tumors; performs microvascular decompression for trigeminal neuralgia and hemifacial spasm; and manages emergency intracranial hypertension with decompressive craniectomy. In spinal surgery, he performs ACDF, posterior cervical foraminotomy, lumbar microdiscectomy, PLIF/TLIF fusion, and intradural tumor resection. He performs ventricular endoscopy for hydrocephalus, aqueductoplasty, and tumor biopsy.

Dr. Al Shammari has published in the British Journal of Neurosurgery and the Pan Arab Journal of Neurosurgery on brain tumor surgery outcomes in Kuwait, skull base surgery results, and hydrocephalus management. He participates in the World Federation of Neurosurgical Societies and presents at the Arab Association of Neurological Sciences annual conference.
