Dr. Bader Al-Mutairi

Dr. Bader Al-Mutairi is a consultant psychiatrist at the Kuwait Centre for Mental Health (KCMH) in Kuwait City — Kuwait's principal psychiatric institution and the main tertiary mental health referral centre for the Gulf state. With 16 years of specialist experience, he manages the full range of psychiatric conditions within Kuwait's public mental health system and through private consultation.

Kuwait's mental health landscape reflects the pressures of Gulf society: high rates of depression and anxiety in a population experiencing rapid socioeconomic change, significant unrecognised PTSD in those with conflict exposure histories, and challenges around alcohol and substance use given the country's Islamic prohibition framework. Dr. Al-Mutairi's addiction psychiatry subspecialty addresses substance use disorders in a context where treatment-seeking is stigmatised and clinical pathways are limited.

He trained at Kuwait University and in the UK, where he obtained MRCPsych — the Royal College of Psychiatrists' membership qualification — before returning to Kuwait. He has Arabic- and English-language clinical competency, enabling him to serve Kuwait's diverse expatriate workforce.

Dr. Al-Mutairi completed his MBChB at Kuwait University's Faculty of Medicine and undertook psychiatry specialist training in Kuwait and the United Kingdom, where he obtained MRCPsych (Membership of the Royal College of Psychiatrists). He also holds the Arab Board of Psychiatry certification. He has completed subspecialty training in addiction psychiatry and consultation-liaison psychiatry and participates in Royal College of Psychiatrists continuing professional development. He has undertaken cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) training and supervises trainees in evidence-based psychotherapy.

Dr. Al-Mutairi provides comprehensive psychiatric assessment and management. His mood disorder practice covers major depressive disorder and bipolar disorder with comprehensive psychopharmacological management including antidepressants, mood stabilisers (lithium, valproate, lamotrigine), and atypical antipsychotics. For treatment-resistant depression, he oversees electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) at KCMH.

His addiction psychiatry practice manages alcohol and substance use disorders with medically supervised detoxification, motivational interviewing, and relapse prevention pharmacotherapy. In psychosis, he manages schizophrenia and schizoaffective disorder with antipsychotic medication including depot formulations. He provides consultation-liaison psychiatry services for Kuwait's general hospitals, assessing psychiatric co-morbidity in medical and surgical inpatients.

Kuwait's expatriate population represents approximately 70% of the country's residents, and many require psychiatric services in English. Dr. Al-Mutairi is fluent in Arabic and English and provides psychiatric consultation for Kuwait's international workforce through both KCMH and private consultation. Video consultations are available for follow-up and second opinion psychiatric assessments. For expatriate patients, he is experienced in producing psychiatric reports and documentation required by employers and embassies.

Dr. Al-Mutairi is a Member of the Royal College of Psychiatrists (MRCPsych, UK) and holds the Arab Board of Psychiatry certification.
