Dr. Aigerim Toktosunova

Dr. Aigerim Toktosunova is a consultant emergency physician at the National Hospital of the Kyrgyz Republic in Bishkek — the country's primary national referral centre and the largest hospital in Central Asia by bed capacity. With 12 years of emergency medicine experience in one of Central Asia's most demanding clinical environments, Dr. Toktosunova has developed expertise in managing high-acuity presentations including polytrauma, cardiac arrest, sepsis, and toxicological emergencies.

Kyrgyzstan's challenging geography — with mountainous terrain, limited pre-hospital care infrastructure, and significant distances between districts and Bishkek — means that many patients arrive at the National Hospital having experienced prolonged transport times after injury or acute illness. Dr. Toktosunova is trained to manage patients whose conditions have deteriorated during transport, applying damage control resuscitation principles and critical care stabilisation in the emergency setting.

Toxicological emergencies, particularly pesticide and alcohol poisoning, represent a significant emergency medicine burden in Kyrgyzstan and Central Asia. Dr. Toktosunova has substantial experience managing organophosphate poisoning, alcohol intoxication and withdrawal, and medication overdose.

She holds ATLS (Advanced Trauma Life Support) certification and has experience with point-of-care ultrasonography (POCUS) for rapid evaluation of cardiac tamponade, pneumothorax, and abdominal free fluid in trauma. She communicates in Kyrgyz, Russian, and English.

Dr. Toktosunova completed her MD at the Kyrgyz State Medical Academy (KSMA) in Bishkek — Kyrgyzstan's leading medical school, historically affiliated with the Soviet medical education system and now pursuing international accreditation. She undertook her specialist residency in Emergency Medicine at the National Hospital of the Kyrgyz Republic. She holds ATLS (Advanced Trauma Life Support) provider certification. She completed additional training in critical care and resuscitation through WHO-supported training programmes in Bishkek and a clinical attachment at an emergency department in Russia. She participates in continuing medical education through the Kyrgyz Medical Association and Association of Emergency Physicians of Kyrgyzstan.

Dr. Toktosunova manages the full spectrum of emergency presentations at Kyrgyzstan's national hospital. In trauma, she applies ATLS protocols for polytrauma assessment (primary and secondary survey), manages haemorrhagic shock with damage control resuscitation, and coordinates emergency surgical and orthopaedic activation. She performs advanced airway management including rapid sequence intubation, surgical airway management (cricothyrotomy), chest decompression for tension pneumothorax, and tube thoracostomy.

In critical resuscitation, she manages cardiac arrest (ACLS protocols), septic shock (Surviving Sepsis Campaign bundles), anaphylaxis, and acute respiratory failure with non-invasive ventilation. She uses point-of-care ultrasound for FAST examination in trauma and bedside cardiac assessment. In toxicology, she manages organophosphate poisoning with atropine and pralidoxime, alcohol-related emergencies, and medication overdoses. She inserts central venous catheters and arterial lines for monitoring critically ill patients.

The National Hospital of the Kyrgyz Republic serves as Kyrgyzstan's emergency reference facility and receives patients from across the country and from neighbouring Tajikistan and Afghanistan for complex cases. Dr. Toktosunova consults in Kyrgyz, Russian, and English. For foreign nationals including Chinese traders, UN and NGO staff, and tourists experiencing medical emergencies in Kyrgyzstan, Bishkek offers the highest level of acute care available in the country. For non-emergency specialist consultations, referrals to Almaty (Kazakhstan), Tashkent (Uzbekistan), or abroad can be facilitated.

Dr. Toktosunova has received the Association of Emergency Physicians of Kyrgyzstan Annual Recognition Award for her outstanding contributions to emergency medicine capacity building and ATLS provider training across Bishkek hospitals. She was formally commended by the National Hospital administration for her leadership in implementing advanced cardiopulmonary resuscitation protocols and for pioneering the introduction of point-of-care ultrasonography in the emergency department — significantly improving rapid diagnosis of pneumothorax, pericardial effusion, and abdominal free fluid.

She has been acknowledged by the Kyrgyz Ministry of Health for her contributions to emergency medicine triage protocol standardization. She is an invited faculty member at Central Asian emergency medicine training workshops.
