Dr. Agnese Liepiņa

Dr. Agnese Liepiņa is a senior consultant paediatrician at the Bērnu klīniskā universitātes slimnīca (BKUS) — the Children's Clinical University Hospital in Riga, Latvia's specialist national paediatric hospital and the country's primary referral centre for complex childhood medical conditions. The hospital is affiliated with Rīga Stradiņš University (RSU) and serves as Latvia's academic centre for paediatric medicine, training the country's paediatric specialists. With 16 years of clinical experience, she is among Latvia's most experienced paediatricians.

Dr. Liepiņa obtained her MRCPCH from the UK's Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health during an advanced training period in the United Kingdom, reflecting Latvia's strong European integration in medical education since EU accession. She has developed particular expertise in paediatric infectious disease — a specialty that carries added importance in Latvia given the country's geographic position between Russia, Estonia, and Lithuania, and the continuing relevance of vaccine-preventable infections in the post-Soviet space.

She is actively involved in Latvia's national paediatric vaccination programme advisory group and contributes to infectious disease outbreak management within the hospital.

Dr. Liepiņa completed her medical degree at Rīga Stradiņš University (RSU) Faculty of Medicine — Latvia's primary medical university. She undertook paediatrics residency at BKUS and obtained Latvian specialist certification in paediatrics. She completed further advanced training in the United Kingdom, obtaining Membership of the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health (MRCPCH, UK). She undertook a paediatric infectious disease observership at Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH) in London. She is a member of the European Paediatric Association (EPA).

Dr. Liepiņa's clinical expertise spans general paediatrics and paediatric infectious disease. For general paediatrics, she provides child health surveillance, development assessments, vaccination, management of common childhood illnesses (respiratory infections, gastroenteritis, urinary tract infections), and chronic disease management including asthma and allergy. She manages children with failure to thrive and nutritional disorders.

In paediatric infectious disease, she manages bacterial meningitis, neonatal sepsis, pneumonia, osteomyelitis, and complex viral infections including CMV, EBV, and arboviral disease. She coordinates antimicrobial stewardship, selecting and monitoring antibiotic therapy for complex childhood infections. She performs and interprets paediatric lumbar puncture for CSF analysis in suspected meningitis.

Dr. Liepiņa consults in Latvian, Russian, English, and German. BKUS serves Latvia's ethnically diverse population — including a significant Russian-speaking minority — and the hospital provides paediatric services for both EU citizens and non-EU patients. Latvia is a Schengen area country, and the hospital has experience with international insurance and coordination with EU health systems.
