About Dr. Geagea
Dr. Fady Geagea is a professor and chief of neurosurgery at the American University of Beirut Medical Center — one of the Arab world's most distinguished academic medical institutions. AUBMC's neurosurgery department has a long tradition of excellence, attracting both domestic and regional patients for complex cranial and spinal procedures. Dr. Geagea has led the program for over two decades, building expertise in minimally invasive spine surgery and cerebrovascular neurosurgery that positions him among the region's premier neurosurgeons.
His spine surgery practice reflects a philosophy of minimal access: using tubular retractors, endoscopes, and stereotactic navigation to perform discectomy, decompression, and fusion procedures through the smallest possible surgical corridors, reducing muscle disruption, blood loss, and recovery time. He manages the full spectrum of degenerative cervical and lumbar spinal disease, spinal tumors, and spinal deformity.
In cerebrovascular surgery, Dr. Geagea is experienced in microsurgical aneurysm clipping and AVM resection, performing these highly demanding procedures with the precision demanded by AUBMC's complex referral patient population. He works closely with the interventional neuroradiology team to determine optimal treatment — surgical or endovascular — for each individual aneurysm.
Despite Lebanon's extraordinary recent crises, including the catastrophic 2020 Beirut port explosion and ongoing economic collapse, AUBMC has maintained its clinical and academic standards — a testament to the dedication of clinicians like Dr. Geagea. He communicates in English, French, and Arabic.
Education & Training
Dr. Geagea obtained his MD from the American University of Beirut Faculty of Medicine and completed Neurosurgery residency at AUBMC. He undertook a Cerebrovascular and Skull Base Neurosurgery Fellowship at the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio, USA, followed by a Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery Fellowship at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. He holds the FAANS (Fellow of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons) and a PhD in Neuroscience from the American University of Beirut. He holds the rank of Professor at AUB Faculty of Medicine.
Clinical Expertise & Procedures
Dr. Geagea's neurosurgical repertoire is broad and complex. In cerebrovascular surgery, he performs microsurgical aneurysm clipping for unruptured and ruptured cerebral aneurysms, AVM resection, cavernous malformation excision, and carotid endarterectomy. In brain tumor surgery, he uses neuronavigation, intraoperative MRI, and awake craniotomy with cortical mapping for eloquent area tumor resection. In minimally invasive spine, he performs tubular microdiscectomy, microendoscopic laminectomy, MIS-TLIF, percutaneous pedicle screw placement, and endoscopic discectomy. He manages hydrocephalus with VP shunting and endoscopic third ventriculostomy.
Research & Publications
Dr. Geagea has published over 70 papers in the Journal of Neurosurgery, Neurosurgery, and Spine on cerebrovascular surgery outcomes, minimally invasive spine techniques, and neurosurgical education in Lebanon. He is a principal investigator on AUB neurosurgery research grants and presents at AANS Annual Scientific Meeting, CNS, and the Arab Association of Neurological Sciences. He serves on the Journal of Neurosurgery editorial board.
International Patient Services
AUBMC receives international patients from across the Arab world, the Lebanese diaspora, and beyond for neurosurgical second opinions and complex procedures. Dr. Geagea provides second-opinion consultations in English, French, and Arabic for brain tumor, cerebral aneurysm, and complex spine diagnoses. Video consultations are available for pre-surgical assessment. AUBMC's international patient office coordinates travel, accommodation, and multi-specialty consultations for visiting patients.
Awards & Recognition
Dr. Geagea has received the AANS International Award for Teaching and Education and the Lebanese Society of Neurosurgery Presidential Award. He is a Full Professor at the American University of Beirut and was elected President of the Lebanese Society of Neurosurgery. He serves as a visiting professor at neurosurgery programs in France, the USA, and the Gulf region.
