Dr. Pierre Khoury

Dr. Pierre Khoury is a professor of clinical cardiology at the American University of Beirut Medical Center (AUBMC) — one of the most prestigious academic medical institutions in the Arab world, consistently ranked as the region's top hospital and recognized internationally for the quality of its clinical training and research output. AUBMC's cardiology department combines French and American academic cardiology traditions, reflecting Lebanon's historically bicultural medical education system.

With 24 years of academic cardiology practice, Dr. Khoury is among AUBMC's most recognized clinicians in cardiac imaging. He leads the non-invasive cardiology and echocardiography program, providing advanced multimodality imaging assessments that integrate echocardiography, cardiac MRI, and nuclear cardiology for the evaluation of complex cardiomyopathies, valvular disease, and ischemic heart disease. His diagnostic precision is sought by referring cardiologists across Lebanon and the Arab world.

Despite Lebanon's ongoing political and economic crises, AUBMC has maintained its standards of excellence, and Dr. Khoury has remained committed to his patients and trainees throughout. Dr. Khoury obtained his MD from the Saint Joseph University Faculty of Medicine in Beirut — one of Lebanon's leading French-tradition medical schools. He completed Cardiology residency at AUBMC and undertook an Echocardiography and Non-Invasive Cardiology Fellowship at the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston — one of the world's most celebrated cardiac imaging programs. He holds a PhD in Cardiovascular Physiology from Université Pierre et Marie Curie (Sorbonne) in Paris. He is a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology (FACC), Fellow of the European Society of Cardiology (FESC), and holds a Professorship at the American University of Beirut Faculty of Medicine.

Dr. Khoury's cardiac imaging expertise spans all modalities used in contemporary non-invasive cardiology. In echocardiography, he performs and interprets standard transthoracic, transesophageal, stress (exercise and dobutamine pharmacological), contrast, 3D, and strain/deformation echocardiography. His cardiac MRI practice covers the assessment of cardiomyopathies (HCM, DCM, ARVC, infiltrative), myocarditis, sarcoidosis, pericardial disease, and viability imaging. He interprets nuclear perfusion imaging (SPECT and PET) for ischemia and viability assessment. He provides integrated multimodality cardiac imaging consultations for structural heart disease evaluation prior to intervention and for complex cardiomyopathy diagnosis.

Dr. Khoury has published over 60 papers in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, European Heart Journal, and Circulation Cardiovascular Imaging on cardiac imaging, cardiomyopathy, and cardiovascular epidemiology in the Arab world. He is an active researcher in AUBMC's cardiovascular research program and is an invited speaker at ACC Scientific Sessions, ESC Congress, and regional cardiology meetings. He serves on the editorial board of the Journal of the Lebanese Society of Cardiology.

AUBMC is internationally recognized for academic medical excellence and receives patients from across the Arab world, the Lebanese diaspora in Europe and the Americas, and the broader international medical community. Dr. Khoury provides second-opinion cardiac imaging consultations in English, French, and Arabic. Dr. Khoury is a recipient of the Lebanese Society of Cardiology Research Award and the AUBMC Excellence in Clinical Research Award. He is a Full Professor at the American University of Beirut Faculty of Medicine and a visiting professor at French university hospitals. He serves on the Lebanese Society of Cardiology executive committee and the ESC imaging working group.
