Dr. Comfort Kiawu Kollie

Dr. Comfort Kiawu Kollie is an obstetrician and gynaecologist at John F. Kennedy Medical Center (JFK Medical Center) in Monrovia — Liberia's largest public hospital and national referral centre. With over 10 years of clinical experience, she provides essential maternal and reproductive health services in a country where maternal mortality remains a critical public health challenge. OB/GYN specialists are scarce in Liberia, making Dr. Kollie's expertise particularly important for the women and families she serves. She has practised through challenging periods in Liberia's recent history, maintaining commitment to safe motherhood and quality obstetric care under resource-constrained conditions. Her work encompasses normal and complicated obstetric management, gynaecological care, and family planning services.

Dr. Kollie completed her medical degree (MBBS) at a West African medical school and her specialist training in Obstetrics and Gynaecology through the West African College of Surgeons (WACS) postgraduate training programme — the recognised specialist training pathway for West African countries, equivalent to postgraduate specialist training in the UK or US systems. She obtained her Fellowship of the West African College of Surgeons in Obstetrics and Gynaecology, the highest specialist qualification in the WACS system. She is registered with the Liberian Medical and Dental Association and is a member of the Liberia Obstetrics and Gynecology Society.

Dr. Kollie's clinical expertise focuses on the obstetric and gynaecological needs most critical in the Liberian context. She manages normal and high-risk deliveries, performs caesarean sections, and manages obstetric emergencies including post-partum haemorrhage and eclampsia — the leading causes of maternal death in sub-Saharan Africa. She provides gynaecological services including cervical cancer screening (Pap smear, VIA), management of gynaecological infections, and family planning including intrauterine device (IUD) insertion. She manages incomplete or unsafe abortion complications. Her work includes significant public health dimensions — education about antenatal care, birth preparedness, and family planning for Liberian women.

JFK Medical Center is Liberia's national referral hospital and the primary resource for specialist OB/GYN care in Monrovia. Dr. Kollie primarily serves Liberian women and patients referred from district hospitals across the country. Patients requiring highly complex procedures — complex foetal surgery, advanced maternal-fetal medicine — are advised that these services may require international referral to Dakar, Accra, or Abidjan, which have greater specialist capacity. All consultations are in English. Patients are advised to verify credentials with the Liberian Medical and Dental Association independently before making healthcare decisions.

Dr. Kollie is an active member of the Liberia Obstetrics and Gynecology Society and the Liberian Medical and Dental Association.
