Dr. Emmanuel Kamara

Dr. Emmanuel Kamara is a pulmonologist at John F. Kennedy Medical Center in Monrovia — Liberia's largest public hospital and the country's primary tertiary care institution. With 10 years of respiratory medicine practice in one of West Africa's most challenging healthcare environments, he provides specialist lung care in a country still rebuilding its health system after the 1989–2003 civil war and the 2014–2016 Ebola epidemic.

Liberia carries a significant burden of pulmonary tuberculosis — one of the highest TB incidence rates in West Africa — alongside HIV co-infection, COPD from indoor biomass smoke exposure, and community-acquired pneumonia. Dr. Kamara's practice is fundamentally shaped by these disease priorities, requiring expert clinical assessment in a resource-limited setting where CT scanning and advanced bronchoscopy are not routinely available.

He trained in Ghana at a leading West African teaching hospital, gaining Fellowship-level training in pulmonology and tuberculosis management. He returned to Liberia committed to building respiratory medicine capacity at JFK Medical Center. He is a member of the West African College of Physicians and participates in regional TB management training programs coordinated with WHO and the Global Fund.

Dr. Kamara completed his MBBS at the University of Liberia College of Medicine — Liberia's national medical training institution, which has been rebuilding its academic programs after significant disruption during the civil war years. He subsequently pursued pulmonology training in Ghana, completing a Fellowship in Pulmonology at Korle Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra — West Africa's most prominent academic hospital and a major training center for the region's physicians.

He holds a WHO-issued Certificate in Tuberculosis Management, having completed specialized TB training through programs coordinated with the National Tuberculosis Control Programme of Liberia. He is a member of the Liberia Medical and Dental Association (LMDA) and the West African College of Physicians.

Dr. Kamara's pulmonology practice is centered on tuberculosis management — diagnosing and treating all forms including drug-susceptible TB, multidrug-resistant TB (MDR-TB), and extensively drug-resistant TB (XDR-TB). He manages HIV/TB co-infection with HAART and TB regimen coordination. He performs sputum AFB smear, culture, and GeneXpert MTB/RIF testing for TB diagnosis.

For COPD and asthma, he provides assessment with spirometry and manages pharmacological therapy including bronchodilators and inhaled corticosteroids. He manages community-acquired pneumonia including severe cases requiring hospitalization. He performs pleural aspiration for pleural effusion diagnosis and drainage. For patients with respiratory failure, he coordinates oxygen therapy and non-invasive ventilation support within JFK Medical Center's limited ICU capacity.

Dr. Kamara consults in English — Liberia's official language — and communicates in Liberian Kreyol. JFK Medical Center serves as the primary referral hospital for patients from across Liberia and occasionally from neighboring Sierra Leone and Guinea. International NGO workers, UN staff, and diplomatic personnel stationed in Monrovia also access his services for respiratory conditions.

For complex cases requiring CT thorax, PET scan, or thoracoscopic biopsy beyond JFK's capacity, Dr. Kamara assists with referrals to Accra, Dakar, or internationally. In-person consultation at JFK Medical Center in Monrovia is the primary access mode for his services.

Dr. Kamara has been recognized by the Liberia Medical and Dental Association for his dedication to building pulmonology capacity in Liberia. He has contributed to the National Tuberculosis Control Programme's clinical training activities and has been involved in MDR-TB management program development at JFK Medical Center in partnership with international TB partners including the Global Fund. He serves as a clinical supervisor for medical interns and residents rotating through JFK's internal medicine and pulmonology wards.
