Dr. Marc Hoffmann

Dr. Marc Hoffmann is a senior emergency medicine specialist at the Centre Hospitalier de Luxembourg (CHL) — Luxembourg's largest public hospital and principal national referral centre for acute care. With over 15 years of experience in emergency medicine, he is one of Luxembourg's experienced emergency physicians, managing the full spectrum of acute and life-threatening conditions that present to the emergency department. Luxembourg, as a prosperous EU member state, operates a highly developed healthcare system aligned with neighbouring France, Germany, and Belgium, and CHL's emergency department functions to European emergency medicine standards. Dr. Hoffmann's multilingual capability — covering all four of Luxembourg's commonly used languages — enables him to provide seamless communication with Luxembourg's diverse and multicultural population.

Dr. Hoffmann completed his medical degree (MD) at a European university — consistent with Luxembourg's tradition of medical graduates training in neighbouring France, Germany, or Belgium — followed by specialist emergency medicine training. He obtained the European Board of Emergency Medicine (EBEM) examination — the European specialist standard in emergency medicine — and holds additional Fellowship in Emergency Medicine (FCEM) or equivalent. He is registered with the Ordre des Médecins du Grand-Duché de Luxembourg. He has completed advanced resuscitation training including Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS), and European Resuscitation Council (ERC) instructor-level certification.

Dr. Hoffmann's emergency medicine expertise covers the full spectrum of acute presentations including major trauma, cardiac arrest, acute coronary syndromes, stroke, anaphylaxis, severe sepsis and septic shock, acute poisoning, and respiratory failure. His procedural skills include advanced airway management and intubation, point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) for emergency diagnosis, chest decompression, central venous access, and procedural sedation. His toxicology experience encompasses the management of pharmaceutical, recreational drug, and chemical exposures. He coordinates trauma team activations and serves as team leader in resuscitation situations. He has significant experience managing the medical needs of Luxembourg's large expatriate population and cross-border workers.

Luxembourg is home to a large international population — approximately half of its residents are non-Luxembourgish — including substantial numbers from Portugal, France, Belgium, Germany, Italy, and beyond. CHL's emergency department serves this multilingual, multicultural population daily. For acute or emergency medical needs, patients from across Luxembourg and cross-border from neighbouring France, Germany, and Belgium may present to CHL's emergency department. Dr. Hoffmann consults in Luxembourgish, French, German, and English, facilitating communication with virtually any European patient. Emergency medicine is by nature an immediate service and does not require pre-planned appointments — patients with acute medical needs should present directly to the emergency department.

Dr. Hoffmann is an active member of the European Society for Emergency Medicine (EUSEM) and the Société Luxembourgeoise de Médecine d'Urgence, the national emergency medicine body. He has participated in ERC and EUSEM educational programmes and has contributed to emergency medicine training for junior physicians and nursing staff at CHL. He has an ATLS instructor certification and contributes to trauma simulation training. He participates in continuing medical education in toxicology, emergency ultrasound, and critical care to maintain his skills at the European clinical standard. He is an advocate for developing emergency medicine as a recognised specialty within Luxembourg's medical system.
