Dr. Grace Chikumba Phiri

Dr. Grace Chikumba Phiri is a paediatrician at Kamuzu Central Hospital in Lilongwe — Malawi's capital city hospital and one of the country's two main national referral hospitals. With 13 years of paediatric clinical experience, she provides specialist child health care in one of Sub-Saharan Africa's most resource-constrained healthcare systems.

Malawi faces a profound burden of childhood illness. Malaria — predominantly Plasmodium falciparum — remains the leading cause of pediatric admission and mortality at Kamuzu Central Hospital, and Dr. Chikumba Phiri manages uncomplicated and severe malaria daily. Severe acute malnutrition, which worsens child immunocompetence and outcome from infection, is highly prevalent, and she provides therapeutic feeding and nutritional rehabilitation. HIV in children — despite significant success with PMTCT programs — continues to require specialist paediatric management including antiretroviral therapy and opportunistic infection prevention.

Neonatal sepsis, childhood pneumonia, and bacterial meningitis are other major conditions she manages. She consults in Chichewa — Malawi's national language — and English.

Dr. Chikumba Phiri completed her MBBS at the University of Malawi College of Medicine (now Kamuzu University of Health Sciences) and her paediatric specialist training through the Masters of Medicine (MMed) in Paediatrics and Child Health at the same institution, with clinical training at Kamuzu Central Hospital and Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital in Blantyre. She is a member of the Medical Association of Malawi and the Malawi Paediatric Society, and has participated in UNICEF and WHO-supported child health training programs.

Dr. Chikumba Phiri's paediatric practice is shaped by Malawi's disease burden. She manages severe malaria with IV artesunate, performs cerebral malaria management including seizure control and respiratory support. She manages severe acute malnutrition using WHO therapeutic feeding protocols — F-75, F-100, and ready-to-use therapeutic food (RUTF). She manages HIV in children with antiretroviral therapy, treatment of opportunistic infections (PCP, cryptococcal meningitis, TB-HIV co-infection), and coordinates PMTCT for HIV-positive mothers. Neonatal care — resuscitation, neonatal sepsis with IV antibiotics, jaundice with phototherapy — is also a core component. She performs lumbar puncture for meningitis diagnosis, IV cannulation, and nasogastric tube feeding.

Kamuzu Central Hospital serves Malawian domestic patients and occasional expatriate families of NGO workers, missionaries, and development organization staff based in Lilongwe. Dr. Chikumba Phiri consults in English for international patients and can provide medical documentation for international insurance claims. Malawi has a significant international humanitarian presence in Lilongwe, and pediatric care at KCH is accessible to this community. For complex specialist care beyond current Malawian capacity, referrals to South Africa are coordinated through the Ministry of Health referral system.

Dr. Chikumba Phiri is a member of the Medical Association of Malawi and the Malawi Paediatric Society. She contributes to paediatric clinical training at Kamuzu University of Health Sciences and has participated in UNICEF-supported Integrated Management of Childhood Illness (IMCI) training programs for Malawi's clinical officers and nurses. She has been recognized by Kamuzu Central Hospital for her sustained contribution to paediatric services.
