Dr. Subramaniam Pillai

Dr. Subramaniam Pillai is a senior consultant orthopaedic surgeon at Gleneagles Kuala Lumpur, one of Malaysia's most established private hospitals in the Parkway Pantai group. With more than 21 years of experience, he is recognized as one of Kuala Lumpur's leading orthopaedic surgeons, with a high-volume practice in joint replacement surgery and sports medicine.

Dr. Subramaniam trained at the University of Malaya before completing his postgraduate training and Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons in Trauma and Orthopaedics (FRCS, UK). He undertook subspecialty joint replacement fellowships in Australia and the United Kingdom, returning to Malaysia with expertise in advanced arthroplasty techniques.

His practice at Gleneagles encompasses a wide range of orthopaedic conditions, from primary total knee and hip replacement in elderly patients with arthritis, to arthroscopic surgery and ACL reconstruction in younger athletes. Dr. Subramaniam Pillai obtained his MBBS from the University of Malaya Faculty of Medicine. He completed his orthopaedic surgery training at Hospital Kuala Lumpur and Universiti Malaya Medical Centre (UMMC) before obtaining the Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons in Trauma and Orthopaedics (FRCS T&O, UK).

He completed joint replacement fellowships at Royal Melbourne Hospital, Australia, and Wrightington Hospital (the UK centre of excellence for arthroplasty), gaining extensive experience in complex primary and revision arthroplasty.

Dr. Subramaniam is registered with the Malaysian Medical Council and is an active member of the Malaysian Orthopaedic Association, serving on its continuing education committee.

Dr. Subramaniam's primary focus is total joint arthroplasty — he has performed over 3,000 total knee and hip replacement procedures and is experienced in both cemented and cementless implant systems, as well as unicompartmental knee arthroplasty for suitable patients.

His sports medicine practice addresses knee ligament injuries (ACL, PCL, LCL, MCL), meniscal tears, shoulder instability, and rotator cuff pathology using arthroscopic techniques. He manages these conditions in both recreational and competitive athletes.

In spine surgery, he manages lumbar disc disease, spinal stenosis, and cervical spondylosis requiring decompressive procedures. He also manages fractures and trauma, including complex peri-prosthetic fractures around joint replacements.
