Dr. Josef Camilleri

Dr. Josef Camilleri is a consultant general and colorectal surgeon at Mater Dei Hospital in Msida — Malta's only general hospital and the country's principal site for surgical care. With 20 years of surgical experience, Dr. Camilleri is one of Malta's most experienced colorectal surgeons, performing a high volume of laparoscopic colorectal resections for cancer, diverticular disease, and inflammatory bowel disease.

Malta's position as an EU member state with an English-speaking, internationally trained medical workforce makes it an accessible healthcare destination for patients from the United Kingdom and Italy. Mater Dei Hospital operates to European standards, is recognised by European health insurance schemes, and is the site of the University of Malta Medical School's clinical training.

Dr. Camilleri trained at the Royal College of Surgeons of England — one of the world's most prestigious surgical training institutions — and holds the FRCS. He also holds the FEBS (Fellow of the European Board of Surgery) in General Surgery.

Dr. Camilleri completed his MD at the University of Malta and undertook surgical training in Malta and the United Kingdom, earning the FRCS of the Royal College of Surgeons of England. He completed subspecialty training in colorectal surgery at a UK colorectal unit. He holds the FEBS (Fellow of the European Board of Surgery) in General Surgery, which confirms his competence against European surgical training standards. He participates in the European Society of Coloproctology Congress annually.

Dr. Camilleri performs laparoscopic colorectal surgery including right and left hemicolectomy, sigmoid resection, anterior resection, and abdomino-perineal resection for colorectal cancer. He performs laparoscopic cholecystectomy, appendectomy, and inguinal hernia repair using TAPP and TEP techniques. For rectal pathology, he performs transanal endoscopic microsurgery (TEM) for early rectal lesions. He manages benign anorectal conditions including haemorrhoids, anal fistula, and perianal abscess. He performs emergency laparotomy for acute abdominal emergencies including perforated viscus and bowel obstruction.

Mater Dei Hospital provides services for Maltese residents and EU/UK patients who can access care under bilateral healthcare agreements. Malta is a convenient surgical destination for patients from the UK and Italy due to its English-speaking environment and EU health card acceptance. Dr. Camilleri offers pre-operative video consultations for patients who wish to review imaging or colonoscopy results before travelling to Malta. He consults in Maltese, English, and Italian.

He has contributed to Malta's national colorectal cancer screening programme advisory group and has been recognized by Mater Dei Hospital for his leadership in developing the institution's laparoscopic colorectal surgery program. He presents at ESCP annual congresses and serves on the Maltese Surgical Society's education committee.
