Dr. Raymond Philip

Dr. Raymond Philip is the senior internal medicine physician at Majuro Hospital, providing the highest level of general specialist medicine available in the Marshall Islands. With 12 years of internal medicine experience, Dr. Philip manages the complex overlap of diabetes, hypertension, and chronic kidney disease that represents the dominant clinical challenge in Marshallese healthcare.

The Marshall Islands has extraordinarily high rates of diabetes — affecting up to 30% of adults — and diabetic kidney disease is the leading cause of end-stage renal disease (ESRD), which requires either dialysis or kidney transplantation. Majuro Hospital has a limited peritoneal dialysis programme, but haemodialysis is not available in the Marshall Islands; patients with ESRD requiring haemodialysis must travel to Hawaii, Fiji, or the Philippines, often under financial hardship. Dr. Philip is a key clinical advocate for patients navigating this system.

Dr. Philip is bilingual in English and Marshallese. He holds MRCP (UK) — a demanding specialist qualification — making him one of the most formally qualified internists in the Pacific microstate region.

Dr. Philip completed his MD at the University of Hawaii John A. Burns School of Medicine before returning to the Marshall Islands to begin his medical career. He subsequently completed postgraduate training in internal medicine in the United Kingdom, earning Membership of the Royal Colleges of Physicians (MRCP UK) — a globally recognised specialist qualification.

He holds a Diploma in Nephrology and has completed advanced training in chronic kidney disease management through the International Society of Nephrology (ISN) and its Pacific-focused programmes. He completed a clinical attachment at Queen's Medical Center, Honolulu, Hawaii, focusing on diabetic nephropathy and renal replacement therapy. He participates in the Pacific Open Learning Health Net (POLHN) continuing internal medicine education.

Dr. Philip's principal clinical expertise lies in the management of diabetic kidney disease — the management of chronic kidney disease (CKD) as a complication of the Marshall Islands' extreme diabetes burden — including staging, retardation of progression, and preparation for renal replacement therapy. He manages peritoneal dialysis for eligible ESRD patients at Majuro Hospital and coordinates with overseas dialysis centres for patients who need to travel for haemodialysis.

In general internal medicine, Dr. Philip manages hypertension (including resistant hypertension in patients with CKD), thyroid disorders, dyslipidaemia, and heart failure. He also manages tuberculosis and other infectious diseases presenting in patients with diabetes or immunocompromise. He performs ECG interpretation and basic procedural skills including pleural tap.

Dr. Philip is dedicated to serving Marshallese communities and addressing the diabetic kidney disease epidemic. He has contributed to the RMI NCD STEPS Survey and presented data on diabetic kidney disease outcomes in the Marshall Islands at the Pacific NCD Forum and the International Society of Nephrology Pacific Nephrology Symposium.

He collaborates with the WHO RMI Country Office and the ISN's Pacific chapter on improving chronic kidney disease management capacity in the Marshall Islands. He contributes to advocacy for improved renal replacement therapy access for Marshallese patients and is a participant in the Pacific Nuclear Health Initiative examining radiation-related kidney health effects.

Majuro Hospital serves as the Marshall Islands' primary referral facility, and Dr. Philip sees patients referred from outer atoll health dispensaries across the nation's 29 atolls. Patients requiring haemodialysis, specialist renal transplantation assessment, advanced cardiac care, and complex oncology are referred to Fiji, Hawaii, or the Philippines through the RMI government's medical referral programme.
