About Dr. Ramessur
Dr. Vikash Ramessur is one of Mauritius's most distinguished cardiologists, practising at Apollo Bramwell Hospital in Moka — the island's premier private hospital and part of the Apollo Hospitals Group, one of Asia's foremost healthcare networks. With over 20 years of specialist experience and training at leading institutions in the United Kingdom and Europe, Dr. Ramessur offers a level of cardiac expertise and interventional capability that is exceptional not just for Mauritius but for the wider Indian Ocean region. Apollo Bramwell is equipped with state-of-the-art cardiac catheterisation laboratories and electrophysiology suites, enabling Dr. Ramessur to perform the full range of complex coronary interventions and device implantations that many patients in the region would otherwise need to travel to South Africa, India, or Europe to access. Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in Mauritius — driven by the high prevalence of diabetes, hypertension, obesity, and dyslipaemia in the Mauritian population — and Dr. Ramessur's practice spans prevention, acute intervention, and long-term management across this spectrum. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of London and of the European Society of Cardiology, credentials that reflect his internationally benchmarked training and clinical standards. He also serves as a medical tourism specialist for Apollo Bramwell, receiving cardiac patients from neighbouring islands in the Indian Ocean and from mainland Africa seeking high-quality cardiac intervention.
Education & Training
Dr. Ramessur completed his MBBS at the University of Mauritius and pursued postgraduate medical training in the United Kingdom, earning his MRCP (UK) and subsequently his MD in Cardiology from the University of Leeds. He completed a specialist fellowship in interventional cardiology at the Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust — one of the UK's leading centres for percutaneous coronary intervention and structural heart disease — and a further attachement in cardiac electrophysiology at the Hôpital Lariboisière in Paris, France. He was elected as a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of London (FRCP) and as a Fellow of the European Society of Cardiology (FESC). He maintains active membership of ESC working groups in interventional cardiology and heart failure.
Clinical Expertise & Procedures
Dr. Ramessur's interventional cardiology expertise encompasses the full range of percutaneous coronary procedures. He performs primary PCI for ST-elevation myocardial infarction — a time-critical procedure that requires Apollo Bramwell's 24/7 catheterisation laboratory activation capability — as well as elective PCI for stable coronary artery disease, including complex multi-vessel and left main disease. His electrophysiology skills include diagnostic EP studies, catheter ablation for supraventricular and ventricular arrhythmias, and implantation of pacemakers and implantable cardioverter-defibrillators (ICDs). He manages all forms of heart failure including advanced systolic dysfunction, and provides comprehensive echocardiographic assessment including transoesophageal echocardiography for structural heart disease evaluation. He leads Apollo Bramwell's heart failure clinic.
Research & Publications
Dr. Ramessur has published research in the European Heart Journal and the Cardiovascular Journal of Africa on coronary artery disease epidemiology and outcomes of PCI in the Mauritian population and in the broader Indian Ocean region. He has contributed to PASCAR's multinational cardiovascular risk factor studies and has presented at the ESC Congress and the African Society of Cardiology annual meetings. He serves on the editorial board of the Mauritius Society of Cardiology's clinical guidelines committee.
International Patient Services
Dr. Ramessur provides consultations in English, French, and Mauritius Creole, and is Apollo Bramwell Hospital's lead cardiologist for international patient cardiac services. Apollo Bramwell attracts cardiac patients from Réunion, Mayotte, the Maldives, the Comoros, Seychelles, and mainland Africa — all benefiting from Mauritius's excellent air connectivity, modern hospital infrastructure, and internationally trained medical team. Dr. Ramessur evaluates and manages the full range of cardiac conditions for international patients, provides detailed pre-procedure and post-procedure cardiac reports in English or French, and liaises with international referring cardiologists for continuity of care. Telemedicine consultation for pre-admission cardiac evaluation is also available.
Awards & Recognition
Dr. Ramessur received the Mauritius Society of Cardiology's Award for Excellence in Clinical Cardiology for his contributions to advancing interventional cardiology in the island. He was recognised by Apollo Bramwell Hospital as its outstanding physician for multiple consecutive years, and was selected by the Pan African Society of Cardiology as a regional faculty member for training programmes on interventional cardiology techniques in sub-Saharan Africa and the Indian Ocean islands.
