Dr. Elena Amor

Dr. Elena Amor is a medical officer at Pohnpei State Hospital focusing on maternal and child health services for the Federated States of Micronesia. With 8 years of clinical experience, Dr. Amor manages obstetric care, neonatal health, and child health for FSM's population on Pohnpei and coordinates with referral networks for complex cases.

She holds a Diploma in Obstetrics and Gynaecology and NRP (Newborn Resuscitation Programme) certification.

She has completed EmONC (Emergency Obstetric and Neonatal Care) training through the UNFPA Pacific programme and IMCI certification. She has undertaken clinical attachments in obstetrics at Guam Regional Medical City and Hawaii's Kapiolani Medical Center for Women and Children, gaining experience in managing high-risk obstetrics in Micronesian populations.

Dr. Amor's expertise centres on obstetric and maternal care in a setting where obesity and diabetes are common complicating factors. She manages antenatal care, including gestational diabetes screening, hypertension in pregnancy, and nutritional counselling. She manages labour and delivery and handles obstetric emergencies including postpartum haemorrhage, eclampsia, and shoulder dystocia.

In child health, Dr. Amor manages neonatal complications, childhood obesity (a significant and growing problem in FSM), respiratory infections, anaemia, and vaccine-preventable diseases. She coordinates FSM's expanded programme on immunisation (EPI) at Pohnpei State Hospital and provides family planning services.

Dr. Amor is dedicated to serving FSM's diverse communities across multiple islands and linguistic groups. She has contributed to maternal mortality data through the FSM Department of Health and participated in UNFPA Pacific maternal health capacity assessments.

She collaborates with UNICEF FSM and WHO on childhood immunisation surveillance and childhood obesity prevention initiatives. Her work on gestational diabetes screening in FSM's antenatal care programme has contributed to the national maternal health guidelines.

Pohnpei State Hospital provides maternal and child health services for Pohnpei and coordinates referrals for high-risk cases from FSM's other island states. Complex obstetric and paediatric cases requiring specialist care not available in FSM are referred to Guam or Hawaii through FSM's medical referral programme.
