Dr. Bayaraa Gantulga

Dr. Bayaraa Gantulga is an ophthalmologist at the Eye Centre of the National Centre for Communicable Diseases in Ulaanbaatar — Mongolia's premier specialised eye care facility and the main referral centre for ophthalmic surgery in the country. With 15 years of ophthalmic practice, Dr. Gantulga performs cataract surgery, glaucoma surgery, and manages diabetic eye disease for Mongolians and patients from neighbouring regions.

Mongolia's extreme climate — characterised by high UV radiation in summer and severe cold winters — contributes to elevated rates of cataracts and pterygium. Simultaneously, Mongolia's rising rates of type 2 diabetes are producing a growing burden of diabetic retinopathy. Dr. Gantulga's work addresses both preventable blindness and diabetic eye disease in a population of approximately 3.4 million, of whom many live in remote areas with limited specialist eye care access.

Dr. Gantulga trained in phacoemulsification in Moscow at the S.N. Fyodorov Eye Microsurgery Complex — one of the world's leading ophthalmic surgical training institutions — where Mongolia has historically sent its best ophthalmology trainees.

Dr. Gantulga completed his MD at the Mongolian National University of Medical Sciences (MNUMS) and underwent ophthalmology specialist training in Mongolia. He completed a Fellowship in Phacoemulsification at the S.N. Fyodorov Eye Microsurgery Complex in Moscow — Russia's most prestigious ophthalmic surgical institution and a global centre for IOL and refractive surgery training. He is a member of the Asia Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology and participates in APAO Congress meetings.

Dr. Gantulga performs phacoemulsification cataract surgery with foldable IOL implantation for age-related and diabetic cataracts. He performs YAG laser capsulotomy for posterior capsule opacification following cataract surgery. In glaucoma, he performs trabeculectomy for medically uncontrolled primary open-angle glaucoma and manages angle-closure glaucoma with laser iridotomy. He performs retinal laser photocoagulation for proliferative diabetic retinopathy and macular laser for diabetic macular oedema. He administers intravitreal anti-VEGF injections for neovascular retinal disease. He excises pterygia with conjunctival autograft.

Dr. Gantulga provides eye care at the National Centre for Communicable Diseases Eye Centre primarily for Mongolian patients. He also treats patients from Inner Mongolia (China) and other Central Asian regions who travel to Ulaanbaatar for specialist eye care. He consults in Mongolian, Russian, and English. Pre-operative video consultations for cataract or glaucoma surgical planning are available for patients in remote Mongolian provinces.

Dr. Gantulga trained at the S.N. Fyodorov Eye Microsurgery Complex in Moscow — one of the world's most recognised ophthalmic training institutions. He is a member of the Mongolian Ophthalmological Society and the Asia Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology. He has participated in outreach eye surgical campaigns in remote Mongolian provinces and has contributed to cataract surgery training programmes for ophthalmology residents at MNUMS.
