Dr. José Mucavel

Dr. José Mucavel is a senior internist at Hospital Central de Maputo (HCM), the largest and most specialised public hospital in Mozambique. Over a career spanning more than 17 years, Dr. Mucavel has become one of the hospital's most experienced physicians in the medical wards, where he manages a high volume of complex patients presenting with advanced HIV disease, co-infection with tuberculosis, and non-communicable conditions such as hypertension and diabetes. He trained at the Faculdade de Medicina da Universidade Eduardo Mondlane in Maputo, completing both his undergraduate medical degree and his specialist training within the Mozambican public health system. He is experienced in the workup and management of febrile illness in the tropical setting, where malaria, enteric fever, and leptospirosis must be distinguished from HIV-related presentations. He performs diagnostic and therapeutic procedures including lumbar puncture, pleural aspiration, paracentesis, central venous catheterisation, and bone marrow aspiration. He is also the internal medicine lead for the HCM hypertension and diabetes outpatient clinic, where he manages patients with multi-organ complications including chronic kidney disease and diabetic neuropathy.

Dr. Mucavel has contributed to departmental audits on ART adherence outcomes and TB treatment completion rates at HCM.
