Dr. Jan Coetzee

Dr. Jan Coetzee is Namibia's most experienced orthopaedic surgeon, with a 22-year career at Medi-Clinic Windhoek that has made him the go-to specialist for joint replacement, sports injuries, and complex trauma in the country's private sector. He trained in South Africa and returned to Namibia to build a practice that now covers the full breadth of orthopaedic surgery, from primary hip and knee replacement to arthroscopic sports procedures, spinal decompression, and fracture management. Dr. Coetzee completed his MBChB at the University of Pretoria in South Africa, one of the country's leading medical schools. He trained as a specialist in Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Pretoria's academic hospital programme, completing his MMed and attaining Fellowship of the College of Orthopaedic Surgeons of South Africa (FC Orth(SA)). He has attended international orthopaedic courses in joint replacement techniques in South Africa and Europe, and he regularly participates in the South African Orthopaedic Association (SAOA) annual meeting to maintain specialist currency.

Dr. Coetzee performs primary and revision total hip and knee replacement surgery, with an extensive track record in both cemented and cementless implant techniques. In sports orthopaedics, he performs arthroscopic anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction, meniscal repair and resection, and rotator cuff repair. He manages shoulder pathology including impingement syndrome, instability, and shoulder arthroplasty. He has considerable experience in spinal surgery including lumbar decompression and discectomy for symptomatic disc herniation and spinal stenosis. His trauma workload includes open and closed fracture management using internal fixation techniques including intramedullary nailing and plating. He also manages soft tissue sports injuries including Achilles tendon repair and ankle ligament reconstruction.

Dr. Coetzee has presented surgical outcomes from Medi-Clinic Windhoek's joint replacement programme at SAOA congresses and has contributed to the Medical Association of Namibia's position statements on orthopaedic care standards. He has participated in post-market surveillance studies for implant systems used in his practice. His interest in improving rehabilitation outcomes after joint replacement has informed Medi-Clinic Windhoek's physiotherapy protocols for orthopaedic patients.
