Dr. Bhagwan Koirala is one of Nepal's most distinguished cardiac surgeons, widely recognized as a pioneer of open-heart surgery in the country. He has been instrumental in establishing modern cardiac surgery infrastructure in Nepal, training multiple generations of cardiac specialists and helping build capacity at major cardiac centers including the Shahid Gangalal National Heart Centre and Grande International Hospital in Kathmandu. Over a career spanning more than three decades, Dr. Koirala has performed thousands of cardiac procedures ranging from complex congenital heart repairs to valve replacement and coronary artery bypass grafting. His clinical focus encompasses all aspects of adult and pediatric cardiac surgery, with particular emphasis on congenital heart disease, which remains a major public health concern across South Asia. Dr. Bhagwan Koirala completed his MBBS from the Institute of Medicine, Tribhuvan University, Kathmandu, one of Nepal's premier medical institutions. He subsequently pursued advanced postgraduate training in cardiac surgery, earning his MS in Cardiac Surgery with distinction. His surgical training included exposure to leading cardiac centers in the region and abroad, where he developed expertise in extracorporeal circulation, congenital cardiac repair techniques, and complex valve surgery. Dr. Koirala has also participated in numerous international fellowships, workshops, and continuing medical education programs in cardiac surgery across Asia and Europe. In congenital heart disease, he performs complex repairs including tetralogy of Fallot correction, ventricular septal defect closure, atrial septal defect repair, and patent ductus arteriosus ligation in both pediatric and adult patients. His valve surgery practice includes mitral valve repair and replacement, aortic valve replacement using both mechanical and biological prostheses, and tricuspid valve repair. In coronary surgery, he performs on-pump and off-pump coronary artery bypass grafting using arterial and venous conduits.
