Dr. Sunita Thapa

Dr. Sunita Thapa is a consultant obstetrician and gynaecologist at B&B Hospital in Kathmandu, one of Nepal's established private hospitals. With 13 years of experience, she provides comprehensive women's health care with a strong emphasis on safe motherhood — a critical priority in Nepal, where maternal mortality has been significantly reduced but remains higher than in high-income countries.

Dr. Thapa trained at Kathmandu Medical College before completing her MD in OB-GYN at the Institute of Medicine (IOM) and obtaining FCPS in OB-GYN. Her practice at B&B Hospital covers the full range of obstetric and gynecological care, from routine antenatal care through high-risk pregnancy management to gynecologic surgery.

She is committed to safe motherhood initiatives in Nepal, participating in community awareness programs on antenatal care, institutional delivery, and postpartum care — particularly targeting women in rural Nepal who travel to Kathmandu for specialist care. She also provides cervical cancer screening services, addressing a significant gynecologic cancer burden in Nepal.

Dr. Thapa is accessible to international patients including trekkers, volunteers, and workers based in Nepal who require obstetric or gynecological care during their time in the country.

Dr. Thapa earned her MBBS from Kathmandu Medical College. She completed her OB-GYN residency at the Institute of Medicine (IOM), Tribhuvan University, obtaining MD OB-GYN, and also holds FCPS in OB-GYN from the College of Physicians and Surgeons Pakistan.

She has completed training in laparoscopic gynecologic surgery and has attended workshops in maternal-fetal medicine and safe motherhood through Nepal Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists programs.

Dr. Thapa's obstetric practice covers routine and complicated pregnancies, including management of hypertension in pregnancy, gestational diabetes, anaemia in pregnancy, twin pregnancies, and abnormal placentation. She performs caesarean sections and supports normal vaginal deliveries.

In gynecology, she manages uterine fibroids (including myomectomy), ovarian cysts (including cystectomy), endometriosis, PCOS with associated menstrual disorders and infertility, and abnormal uterine bleeding. She performs hysteroscopy for uterine cavity assessment and laparoscopic procedures for benign gynecological conditions.

Cervical cancer screening and colposcopy for abnormal smear results are an important part of her practice, given the high prevalence of HPV-related cervical disease in Nepal.

Dr. Thapa has contributed to the Journal of Nepal Medical Association and has presented at the Nepal Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists Annual Conference. Her interests include maternal mortality reduction in Nepal and outcomes of caesarean delivery in Kathmandu private hospitals.

She participates in safe motherhood network activities and contributes to community education on women's reproductive health in Nepal.
