Prof. John van Swieten

Prof. John van Swieten is one of the world's foremost authorities on frontotemporal dementia (FTD) and neurodegenerative brain diseases, based at Erasmus Medical Center in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. Over a career of more than 25 years, he has combined exceptional clinical practice in the Erasmus MC Memory Clinic and neurology department with a globally recognized research program focused on the genetic and molecular underpinnings of FTD and related conditions including progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) and corticobasal degeneration (CBD). Prof. van Swieten leads a multidisciplinary team that evaluates and manages patients with complex cognitive, behavioral, and movement disorders related to neurodegeneration. He is the principal investigator of major European research consortia and has trained numerous neurologists who now lead FTD programs across Europe and beyond. Prof. John van Swieten completed his MD and PhD at Erasmus University Rotterdam, where his doctoral research laid early groundwork for understanding the genetics of neurodegenerative disease. His postgraduate neurological training was conducted at Erasmus MC and included clinical rotations covering the full breadth of neurology, with a progressive focus on cognitive and movement disorders. Following his specialist qualification, Prof. van Swieten pursued additional training in neurogenetics and advanced neuroimaging at leading European centers. He has been a visiting researcher at academic institutions in the United Kingdom, Germany, and the United States, building collaborations that underpin the international research consortia he now leads. He holds a full academic professorship at Erasmus University Rotterdam, where he supervises MD and PhD candidates in clinical neuroscience.

Prof. van Swieten's clinical expertise centers on the diagnosis and management of frontotemporal dementia and its related syndromes. He is skilled in distinguishing FTD from other dementias including Alzheimer's disease, Lewy body dementia, and prion disorders using detailed clinical assessment, neuropsychological testing, advanced MRI and FDG-PET neuroimaging, and genetic analysis. His practice covers the behavioral variant of FTD (bvFTD), the primary progressive aphasias (semantic variant and non-fluent/agrammatic), as well as FTD overlapping with motor neuron disease (FTD-MND) and the Parkinsonism-plus syndromes PSP and CBD. He performs comprehensive genetic counseling for patients with familial neurodegenerative conditions and coordinates access to genetic testing for mutations in GRN, MAPT, C9orf72, and other FTD-causative genes. He also co-manages complex cases with neuropsychiatry, neurogenetics, and palliative care teams.
