Prof. Robert Jan van Geuns

Prof. Robert Jan van Geuns is one of the Netherlands' leading interventional cardiologists, practicing at Erasmus MC in Rotterdam, one of Europe's premier academic cardiac centers. Over a career spanning more than two decades, he has established himself as an international authority on intravascular imaging-guided coronary intervention, particularly the application of optical coherence tomography (OCT) in optimizing percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) outcomes. Prof. van Geuns leads a high-volume interventional cardiology program at Erasmus MC, performing complex coronary procedures as well as structural heart disease interventions. He is actively involved in clinical research investigating novel catheter-based therapies for coronary artery disease and structural cardiac conditions. His work bridges the bench and bedside, informing clinical practice guidelines and training cardiologists from across Europe and beyond. He is recognized as a thought leader at major cardiology congresses including the European Society of Cardiology and TCT meetings.

Prof. Robert Jan van Geuns completed his MD and PhD at Erasmus University Rotterdam, where his doctoral thesis focused on coronary imaging techniques, providing the scientific foundation for his subsequent career in catheter-based coronary diagnostics and intervention. His cardiology training was conducted at Erasmus MC, with subspecialty focus in interventional cardiology and intravascular imaging. He undertook additional training and research fellowships at international cardiac centers in Europe and North America, where he gained expertise in the latest coronary intervention techniques and imaging-guided PCI strategies. Prof. van Geuns holds a full academic professorship at Erasmus University and supervises postgraduate cardiologists and PhD candidates in interventional cardiology research. He is an active member of the European Society of Cardiology and the European Association of Percutaneous Cardiovascular Interventions.

Prof. van Geuns's clinical expertise is centered on complex coronary artery disease management and structural heart disease. In interventional cardiology, he performs high-complexity PCI procedures including left main coronary intervention, bifurcation stenting, chronic total occlusion (CTO) recanalization, and rotational atherectomy for calcified lesions. His particular technical expertise lies in intravascular imaging — using OCT and IVUS to assess lesion severity, guide stent sizing and positioning, and verify optimal stent deployment and expansion, strategies that have been shown to improve clinical outcomes. In structural heart disease, he participates in a multidisciplinary heart team performing TAVI, MitraClip mitral repair, and transcatheter closure procedures. He also leads a cardiac CT imaging program for coronary assessment and structural heart pre-procedural planning.
