Dr. Mahamadou Oumarou

Dr. Mahamadou Oumarou is a general practitioner at Hôpital National de Niamey (HNN), the main national referral hospital in Niger and the country's highest-capacity public facility. With 16 years of practice across both hospital and community settings, Dr. Oumarou has extensive experience managing the full spectrum of primary and acute care presentations encountered in one of the world's most medically underserved countries. Dr. Oumarou's clinical work spans acute and chronic care in HNN's outpatient and general medical wards. He is experienced in the rapid clinical diagnosis of malaria, typhoid fever, and bacterial meningitis using WHO algorithms adapted to low-resource settings, and in the management of severe malaria with parenteral artesunate. He assesses and manages children and adults presenting with acute malnutrition using MUAC and weight-for-height criteria, and he coordinates care with HNN's nutrition unit. He treats diarrhoeal disease with oral and intravenous rehydration and manages complicated pneumonia with available antibiotics. He also manages the chronic disease outpatient load including hypertension and type 2 diabetes, counselling patients on medication adherence and dietary adjustment in the local food culture context.

Dr. Oumarou has contributed to Ministry of Health-commissioned surveys on malaria transmission patterns in the Niamey region and has participated in WHO-supported assessments of healthcare capacity at HNN. He has been involved in multi-country surveillance programmes for meningococcal meningitis, a disease to which Niger's population is especially vulnerable within the meningitis belt. His clinical observations have contributed to district-level epidemiological reporting coordinated by Niger's Direction de la Surveillance Epidémiologique.
