Dr. Ibrahim Sani Kané

Dr. Ibrahim Sani Kané is a general surgeon at the Hôpital National de Niamey — Niger's principal teaching and referral hospital and the country's main surgical centre. With 13 years of experience and specialist training in Senegal, he performs the full range of general surgical procedures in a setting where access to surgical care is severely limited: Niger has fewer than one surgeon per 100,000 population, making each specialist vitally important. Dr. Sani Kané earned his Doctorat en Médecine from the Université Abdou Moumouni in Niamey — Niger's national university — and then completed the DES (Diplôme d'Études Spécialisées) in General Surgery at the Université Cheikh Anta Diop in Dakar, Senegal, one of West Africa's primary surgical training centres. He additionally completed MSF/ICRC-supported trauma surgery training, providing skills in damage control surgery, mass casualty management, and war surgery applicable to Niger's regional security challenges. He has participated in surgical skills training workshops organised by the West African College of Surgeons and the Société Ouest-Africaine de Chirurgie (SOAC).

Dr. Sani Kané's surgical expertise is shaped by Niger's epidemiological profile. He performs appendicectomy, inguinal and umbilical hernia repair, bowel resection and anastomosis, and laparotomy for peritonitis — including the challenging presentation of typhoid intestinal perforation, which requires prompt surgical intervention. Trauma surgery — including management of penetrating abdominal injuries, wound debridement, and fracture stabilisation — is a regular component of his practice. He performs emergency caesarean sections when the obstetric team requires surgical support. He also manages colorectal disease including rectal prolapse, which has high prevalence in Niger's rural population. Complex cases requiring specialist subspecialty input are stabilised and referred to Dakar or France when medically feasible.

Dr. Sani Kané consults in French, Hausa, and Zarma. International humanitarian workers, UN personnel, and development professionals based in Niger who require surgical assessment or emergency surgical intervention are directed to the Hôpital National de Niamey as the country's principal surgical facility. He advises all international travellers to Niger to carry adequate medical evacuation insurance, as complex surgical conditions may require evacuation to Senegal or France for definitive management. He coordinates with international evacuation medical services for complex patient transfers.

Dr. Sani Kané is registered with the Ordre des Médecins du Niger and is a member of the Société Ouest-Africaine de Chirurgie (SOAC). He has been recognised by the Niger Ministry of Public Health for his contributions to emergency surgical care at Hôpital National de Niamey.
