Dr. Wafa Al Rashdi

Dr. Wafa Al Rashdi is a consultant medical oncologist at Sultan Qaboos University Hospital (SQUH) — Oman's leading academic medical center and the primary oncology referral hospital for the Sultanate. As one of Oman's senior female oncologists, Dr. Al Rashdi is a respected figure in Oman's growing cancer medicine community, combining evidence-based systemic therapy with a commitment to patient-centered oncology care.

Oman has significantly developed its oncology infrastructure over the past two decades, and SQUH's oncology department offers comprehensive cancer care including medical oncology, radiation therapy, surgical oncology, and bone marrow transplantation. Dr. Al Rashdi leads the breast and colorectal oncology subspecialty clinics, applying molecular profiling to optimize treatment selection for each patient.

Her breast oncology practice encompasses all subtypes from early hormone receptor-positive disease through aggressive triple-negative and HER2-positive breast cancer. She is experienced with neoadjuvant and adjuvant treatment strategies and uses molecular markers including Ki-67, HER2, and multigene assays to individualize therapy decisions. Her colorectal oncology practice applies RAS, BRAF, MSI, and HER2 testing to guide treatment selection for metastatic disease.

Dr. Al Rashdi collaborates with SQUH's radiation oncology and surgical oncology colleagues through a weekly multidisciplinary tumor board and coordinates clinical trial enrollment through SQUH's research program. She communicates in Arabic and English.

Dr. Al Rashdi obtained her MBBS from Sultan Qaboos University College of Medicine and completed Internal Medicine residency at SQUH. She undertook a Medical Oncology Fellowship at McGill University Health Centre in Montreal, Canada — one of North America's leading academic cancer centers. She holds the FRCR and ESMO certification. She completed additional training in breast oncology through the ESMO Breast Cancer curriculum and maintains active ASCO membership.

Dr. Al Rashdi's oncology practice focuses on systemic therapy for solid tumors. In breast cancer, she prescribes neoadjuvant and adjuvant chemotherapy, CDK4/6 inhibitors, PARP inhibitors, HER2-targeted therapy (trastuzumab, pertuzumab, T-DM1, T-DXd), and immune checkpoint inhibitors for TNBC. For colorectal cancer, she manages FOLFOX and FOLFIRI regimens with bevacizumab or anti-EGFR antibodies based on RAS/BRAF status, and manages MSI-high disease with pembrolizumab. She coordinates bone marrow biopsies for lymphoma staging, performs and interprets tumor marker monitoring, and manages the toxicities of complex oncology regimens. She conducts second-opinion oncology consultations for patients referred from other GCC countries.

Dr. Al Rashdi has published in the Oman Medical Journal, the Gulf Journal of Oncology, and Annals of Oncology on breast and colorectal cancer outcomes at SQUH and the epidemiology of cancer in Oman. She participates in SQUH's clinical trials program and collaborates with the Gulf Cancer League on GCC-wide cancer registry projects. She presents at the Oman Oncology Society annual meeting and ESMO scientific conferences.

SQUH's oncology department serves Omani nationals and expatriates resident in Oman, and increasingly welcomes oncology patients from neighboring countries and East Africa. Dr. Al Rashdi consults in Arabic and English and is experienced providing second-opinion oncology reports for patients from other GCC states. Video consultations are available for initial oncology assessment and second opinions, enabling patients to obtain specialist input before traveling to Muscat.

Dr. Al Rashdi has received the SQUH Clinical Excellence Award in Oncology and has been recognized by the Oman Oncology Society for her contributions to breast and colorectal cancer care. She serves on the Oman National Cancer Control Program advisory committee and is a frequently invited speaker at Gulf oncology symposia.
