Dr. Tariq Mahmood

Dr. Tariq Mahmood is a senior consultant cardiologist at Aga Khan University Hospital (AKUH) in Karachi — Pakistan's most internationally recognized academic medical institution and consistently ranked as one of the top hospitals in South Asia. With 22 years of clinical experience, he is one of Pakistan's leading interventional cardiologists.

Dr. Mahmood trained at Aga Khan University Medical College before completing his FCPS in Cardiology and obtaining his MRCP (UK). He undertook advanced interventional cardiology training at a leading cardiac centre in the United Kingdom before returning to AKUH. He has been a faculty member in the Department of Medicine, Division of Cardiology at AKU for over a decade.

His practice encompasses the full range of interventional cardiology, including primary PCI for acute STEMI, elective complex PCI, and management of acute coronary syndromes. He also runs a dedicated heart failure clinic, which is particularly important in Pakistan where advanced heart failure often presents late due to limited access to preventive care in primary healthcare settings.

Pakistan has among the highest rates of premature cardiovascular disease globally, driven by tobacco use, consanguinity-associated metabolic disorders, hypertension, and delayed diagnosis. Dr. Mahmood is an active advocate for cardiovascular disease prevention in the Pakistani population.

Dr. Mahmood earned his MBBS from Aga Khan University Medical College, one of Pakistan's most academically rigorous and internationally recognized medical programs. He completed his cardiology residency at Aga Khan University Hospital (AKUH) in Karachi, training under leading Pakistani and internationally trained cardiologists, and obtained his FCPS in Cardiology from the College of Physicians and Surgeons Pakistan (CPSP). He subsequently obtained Membership of the Royal College of Physicians (MRCP, UK) — a benchmark of international clinical training standards — and completed advanced interventional cardiology training at St. Bartholomew's Hospital in London, one of the UK's premier cardiac centers, where he trained in primary PCI, complex coronary interventions, and catheterization laboratory management. He has served as an academic faculty member in AKUH's Division of Cardiology for over a decade, supervising postgraduate cardiology trainees and contributing to the AKUH teaching program. He holds active membership in the Pakistan Cardiac Society and the Asian Pacific Society of Cardiology.

Dr. Mahmood's clinical focus is interventional cardiology for coronary artery disease. He performs primary PCI for acute STEMI, complex PCI for multi-vessel disease, and coronary angioplasty and stenting for stable angina. He uses contemporary techniques including intracoronary physiology assessment and advanced imaging.

His heart failure clinic manages patients with systolic and diastolic heart failure, coordinating evidence-based medical therapy, device therapy evaluation (pacemakers, CRT, ICD), and cardiac rehabilitation. He also manages valvular heart disease, atrial fibrillation, hypertension, and dyslipaemia.

Pericardial disease and cardiomyopathies form part of his practice, including assessment of patients with rheumatic heart disease — a condition with significantly higher prevalence in Pakistan than in high-income countries.

Dr. Mahmood has published research in the Journal of Pakistan Medical Association and has contributed to the AKUH cardiology research program. His research interests include outcomes of primary PCI in Pakistan, heart failure epidemiology in Karachi, and rheumatic heart disease burden in South Asia.

He has been involved in multinational cardiology research trials through AKUH's academic partnerships with leading institutions in the UK, USA, and Canada. He presents at the Pakistan Cardiac Society Annual Conference and serves on its continuing education committee.

Dr. Mahmood sees international patients at AKUH, which is JCI-accredited and has an established international patient services department. He consults in Urdu and English. AKUH attracts patients from across Pakistan and from Pakistani diaspora communities in the UK, Middle East, and North America seeking internationally benchmarked cardiac care.
