Dr. Mihai Ionescu

Dr. Mihai Ionescu is a senior interventional cardiologist and electrophysiologist at Fundeni Clinical Institute in Bucharest, Romania's most prestigious multidisciplinary medical center. With 20 years of clinical experience, he has performed over 4,500 coronary interventions and established himself as one of Romania's leading experts in cardiac electrophysiology.

Dr. Ionescu completed an advanced electrophysiology fellowship at the Bordeaux University Hospital in France, one of Europe's foremost centers for cardiac arrhythmia research and treatment. His French training shaped his approach to complex arrhythmia management and catheter ablation techniques.

He leads the Cardiac Electrophysiology Laboratory at Fundeni and has pioneered the introduction of 3D electroanatomical mapping systems for ablation procedures in Romania. He works within a comprehensive cardiac team including cardiac surgeons, imaging specialists, and rehabilitation physicians.

Dr. Ionescu is an active member of the European Society of Cardiology and has contributed to the translation of ESC guidelines into Romanian practice protocols. He regularly supervises cardiology fellows and is an associate professor at Carol Davila University of Medicine in Bucharest.

Dr. Ionescu graduated from Carol Davila University of Medicine and Pharmacy in Bucharest in 2001, Romania's most prestigious medical faculty. He completed his cardiology residency at Fundeni Clinical Institute — Romania's leading tertiary cardiac centre — and undertook an advanced electrophysiology fellowship at the University Hospital of Bordeaux, France (2006–2008), training under one of Europe's preeminent arrhythmia centres with high-volume AF ablation and complex VT ablation programs. His PhD from Carol Davila University (2010) examined catheter ablation outcomes in persistent atrial fibrillation, contributing to the evidence base for AF rhythm control strategies in Romanian patients. He is a Fellow of the European Society of Cardiology (FESC) and is board-certified in cardiology and cardiac electrophysiology by the Romanian College of Physicians. He is an associate professor at Carol Davila University, contributing to postgraduate cardiology education in Romania.

Dr. Ionescu specializes in both interventional cardiology and cardiac electrophysiology, with expertise in coronary angioplasty, stent implantation, and complex ablation procedures for atrial fibrillation, supraventricular tachycardia, and ventricular arrhythmia. He is proficient in 3D electroanatomical mapping, cryoablation, and radiofrequency ablation. He also implants cardiac devices including permanent pacemakers, implantable cardioverter-defibrillators (ICD), and cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) devices. In heart failure management, he coordinates device optimization and hemodynamic monitoring.

Dr. Ionescu has published over 35 peer-reviewed articles in journals including the European Heart Journal and Europace. His research focuses on catheter ablation outcomes, long-term success rates of AF ablation, and optimization of device therapy in heart failure. He collaborates with cardiology centers in France, Germany, and the UK and has presented at ESC congresses and the European Heart Rhythm Association (EHRA) meetings.

Dr. Ionescu speaks Romanian, French, and English, making him accessible to patients from French-speaking countries, Western Europe, and beyond.
