Dr. Jean-Paul Nkurunziza

Dr. Jean-Paul Nkurunziza is a senior paediatrician at the Centre Hospitalier Universitaire de Kigali (CHUK), Rwanda's largest public teaching hospital and the primary tertiary referral centre for complex paediatric cases in the country. With 17 years of clinical experience, he specialises in pediatric infectious diseases, childhood malnutrition and nutrition, and neonatal care. Dr. Nkurunziza has been integral to Rwanda's remarkable progress in child health outcomes, contributing to national programmes addressing preventable childhood illness and malnutrition. His trilingual proficiency in English, French, and Kinyarwanda reflects his commitment to communicating effectively with Rwanda's diverse patient population.

Dr. Nkurunziza earned his MD from the University of Rwanda College of Medicine and Health Sciences and subsequently completed his Masters of Medicine (MMed) in Paediatrics, the recognised postgraduate qualification for specialist paediatric training in East Africa. He undertook subspecialty training in pediatric infectious diseases, with a focus on malaria, HIV in children, and bacterial meningitis management. He has completed training in Integrated Management of Childhood Illness (IMCI) and neonatal resuscitation, and has participated in regional capacity-building workshops supported by WHO and UNICEF. He is board certified in paediatrics within the Rwandan and East African specialist system.

Dr. Nkurunziza manages the full spectrum of childhood illness within a low-resource but increasingly well-equipped hospital setting. His infectious disease expertise covers malaria, HIV/AIDS in children including antiretroviral therapy initiation and monitoring, bacterial and viral meningitis, tuberculosis in children, and pneumonia. His malnutrition work encompasses therapeutic feeding protocols, micronutrient supplementation, and management of severe acute malnutrition. In neonatology, he manages premature infants, neonatal sepsis, neonatal jaundice requiring phototherapy, and hypoxic-ischaemic encephalopathy. He coordinates multidisciplinary teams in managing complex paediatric cases at CHUK.

CHUK is the foremost tertiary hospital in Rwanda and a regional referral centre for complex paediatric cases from neighbouring countries. Rwanda's healthcare system has undergone dramatic improvements over the past two decades, and the country's commitment to universal health coverage has attracted international attention. Medical travellers and expatriate families in Rwanda access CHUK for specialist paediatric care. Dr. Nkurunziza consults in English, French, and Kinyarwanda. Dr. Nkurunziza has been recognised by the Rwanda Biomedical Centre and the Ministry of Health for his contributions to improving paediatric care standards in Rwanda. He has participated in WHO and UNICEF-supported capacity-building initiatives and has been commended for his role in national programmes targeting child mortality reduction. He has presented at East African paediatric conferences and contributed to regional clinical guideline development for childhood infectious disease management.
