Dr. Sultan Al Harthi

Dr. Sultan Al Harthi is a senior consultant hematologist and bone marrow transplant physician at King Faisal Specialist Hospital & Research Centre (KFSH&RC) in Riyadh. KFSH&RC operates one of the largest and most experienced bone marrow transplant programs in the Middle East, performing both autologous and allogeneic transplants for a wide spectrum of hematologic malignancies. Dr. Al Harthi joined the program after completing advanced transplant training in North America and has since contributed to growing the center's allogeneic transplant capacity.

Over 18 years, Dr. Al Harthi has developed deep expertise in the diagnosis and management of acute and chronic leukemias, lymphomas, and multiple myeloma. He applies a precision medicine framework to each patient, integrating cytogenetic and molecular data — including next-generation sequencing — into risk stratification and treatment selection. He is experienced in CAR-T cell therapy coordination and manages the complex post-transplant care of patients including graft-versus-host disease.

Dr. Al Harthi leads a weekly multidisciplinary hematology-oncology board at KFSH&RC that brings together pathologists, radiologists, and hematology nurses to review complex cases. He is an advocate for expanding clinical trial access for Saudi patients with hematologic malignancies and serves on the KFSH&RC oncology research committee.

Fluent in Arabic and English, he works closely with referring physicians across the Kingdom and GCC to ensure timely evaluation and transfer of patients with newly diagnosed or relapsed hematologic cancers.

Dr. Al Harthi earned his MBBS from King Saud bin Abdulaziz University for Health Sciences (KSAU-HS) in Riyadh. He completed Internal Medicine residency at KFSH&RC and then traveled to Canada for specialty training, completing a Hematology Fellowship at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario. He subsequently undertook a focused Bone Marrow Transplantation Fellowship at Princess Margaret Cancer Centre, University of Toronto. He holds the FRCPC in Internal Medicine and Hematology and is certified by the American Board of Hematology (ABH). He has completed CAR-T cell therapy certification training.

Dr. Al Harthi manages the full spectrum of hematologic malignancies from diagnosis through definitive treatment. In acute leukemia, he designs induction and consolidation chemotherapy regimens incorporating minimal residual disease monitoring to guide decisions about transplantation. For lymphoma, he manages diffuse large B-cell lymphoma, Hodgkin lymphoma, follicular lymphoma, and T-cell lymphomas with curative intent. His multiple myeloma practice includes proteasome inhibitor-based and immunomodulatory agent-based induction, autologous stem cell transplant, and maintenance strategies. He performs bone marrow aspirate and biopsy, central venous catheter placement assessment, and intrathecal chemotherapy. He coordinates allogeneic transplant work-up including donor search through international registries.

Dr. Al Harthi has published in the Saudi Medical Journal, the Bone Marrow Transplantation journal, and Blood Advances on topics including allogeneic transplant outcomes in Saudi AML patients and the epidemiology of hematologic malignancies in the GCC region. He participates in international cooperative group trials through KFSH&RC's affiliation with global oncology networks. He is an invited speaker at the Saudi Oncology Society Annual Meeting and the Gulf Hematology and BMT symposium.

KFSH&RC's bone marrow transplant program accepts referrals from across the Arab world, Africa, and South Asia. Dr. Al Harthi consults in Arabic and English and is experienced coordinating care with international hematologists for patients transferred to KFSH&RC for transplant. He provides written second-opinion reports for patients with newly diagnosed hematologic malignancies who wish to confirm their diagnosis and treatment plan before proceeding. Dr. Al Harthi is a recipient of the KFSH&RC Clinical Research Excellence Award and has been recognized by the Saudi Oncology Society for his contributions to hematologic oncology. He serves on the editorial board of a regional hematology journal and is a member of the KFSH&RC BMT steering committee.
