Dr. Oumar Diop

Dr. Oumar Diop is a cardiologist at the Centre Hospitalier National Universitaire (CHNU) de Fann in Dakar, one of West Africa's premier academic medical institutions and the main teaching hospital affiliated with the Université Cheikh Anta Diop (UCAD) — one of Africa's most respected universities. Over a 20-year career, Dr. Diop has established himself as one of Senegal's foremost cardiac specialists, with deep expertise in heart failure, cardiac imaging, and hypertensive heart disease — the dominant forms of cardiac pathology in the Senegalese and broader West African population. He trained entirely at UCAD and CHNU Fann, representing the strength of Senegal's national specialist training system, which produces cardiologists of high calibre within the francophone African academic tradition. He holds a French Echocardiography Certificate from the Société Française de Cardiologie, reflecting his commitment to imaging excellence. He speaks French, Wolof, and Peul — three of Senegal's principal languages — giving him direct access to patients from across the country. He is an active member of the Pan African Society of Cardiology (PASCAR) and contributes to pan-African cardiac research initiatives.

Dr. Diop completed his Doctorat en Médecine at the Université Cheikh Anta Diop de Dakar (UCAD), one of West Africa's oldest and most prestigious universities. He pursued specialist training in Cardiology at UCAD through the Diplôme d'Études Spécialisées (DES) programme at the Faculté de Médecine, Pharmacie et d'Odontologie, completing his Doctorat d'État en Médecine with a cardiology specialisation. He subsequently obtained a Certificate in Echocardiography from the Société Française de Cardiologie, attending training in France to deepen his cardiac imaging skills. He has attended PASCAR and European Society of Cardiology training courses and has maintained regular engagement with the latest cardiovascular research through attendance at international cardiology congresses.

Dr. Diop's cardiac practice at CHNU Fann spans the full range of clinical cardiology with particular strength in echocardiography and heart failure management. He performs and reports transthoracic echocardiography for the assessment of left ventricular function, valvular disease, pericardial effusion, and cardiomyopathy, and he performs stress echocardiography for ischaemia evaluation. His heart failure clinic manages patients with ischaemic, hypertensive, and idiopathic cardiomyopathy, including the peripartum cardiomyopathy that is notably prevalent in West African women. He manages hypertensive heart disease — Senegal's most common form of cardiac presentation — including left ventricular hypertrophy, diastolic dysfunction, and hypertensive emergency. He performs pericardiocentesis for tamponade and cardioversion for atrial arrhythmias. He also participates in CHNU Fann's coronary angiography programme for patients with suspected coronary artery disease.

Dr. Diop has published in the Annales Africaines de Médecine, Cardiovascular Journal of Africa, and has contributed to PASCAR multi-country studies on heart failure epidemiology in sub-Saharan Africa. He has been an investigator in the THESUS-HF registry, contributing data from the Senegalese cohort at CHNU Fann. His research on peripartum cardiomyopathy in Senegal has been presented at PASCAR's biennial congress and has contributed to understanding of this condition's distinctive features in West African women. He has also published on the burden of rheumatic heart disease among young adults in Dakar, a condition that remains significant in Senegal's population.

CHNU Fann is Dakar's leading academic hospital and attracts patients from across Senegal and from neighbouring Guinea-Bissau, The Gambia, Guinea, and Mali who travel to Dakar for cardiac specialist care. Dr. Diop is experienced in consulting diaspora Senegalese patients returning from France, Italy, Spain, and the United States who require cardiac assessment during visits home. He conducts consultations in French and in Wolof, and he can provide written echocardiography reports and consultation summaries in French for patients who require documentation for overseas cardiologists. Dr. Diop has been recognised by the Société Sénégalaise de Cardiologie (SOSENCAR) for his sustained contribution to cardiac care and echocardiography training in Senegal. PASCAR has acknowledged him as a leading contributor to the organisation's research agenda and has invited him to chair symposia at pan-African cardiology meetings. UCAD has recognised his contribution to cardiology education within the faculty, where he supervises DES trainees in cardiology.
