Dr. Aleksandar Nikolić

Dr. Aleksandar Nikolić is a senior neurosurgeon at the Military Medical Academy (VMA) in Belgrade, one of Serbia's most advanced and comprehensive hospital facilities. With 21 years of surgical experience, he has performed over 3,500 cranial and spinal procedures.

Dr. Nikolić completed a neurosurgical fellowship at the Hannover Medical School (MHH) in Germany, renowned for its neurosurgical program. His training in Hannover equipped him with advanced microsurgical skills and expertise in neuronavigation-guided tumor surgery.

He heads the spinal neurosurgery program at the Military Medical Academy and has been instrumental in introducing minimally invasive spine surgery and intraoperative neurophysiological monitoring to the institution. He also manages complex neurotrauma cases, as the VMA serves as a major trauma center for Belgrade.

Dr. Nikolić is an active EANS member and represents Serbia in European neurosurgical quality improvement initiatives. He is a professor at the University of Defence Medical Faculty and is committed to advancing neurosurgical training in Serbia.

Dr. Nikolić received his MD from the University of Belgrade School of Medicine in 2000. He completed his neurosurgery residency at the Military Medical Academy and undertook a neurosurgical fellowship at the Hannover Medical School (MHH), Germany (2005–2006). His PhD from the University of Belgrade in 2009 focused on outcomes in surgical management of high-grade gliomas. He holds certification from the European Board of Neurological Surgery and is a member of the European Association of Neurosurgical Societies (EANS).

Dr. Nikolić's surgical expertise encompasses cranial and spinal neurosurgery. In spinal surgery, he performs microdiscectomy, laminectomy, spinal fusion for instability, and minimally invasive spine procedures using tubular retractor systems. In brain tumor surgery, he performs craniotomies with neuronavigation and intraoperative monitoring for gliomas, meningiomas, and metastatic tumors. He manages complex neurotrauma including traumatic brain injury, epidural and subdural hematomas, and spinal cord injuries. He also treats hydrocephalus and performs cerebrospinal fluid shunt procedures.

Dr. Nikolić has published over 28 peer-reviewed articles in journals including Acta Neurochirurgica and the Serbian Journal of Experimental and Clinical Research. His research focuses on minimally invasive spine surgery outcomes, glioma resection extent and survival, and traumatic brain injury management protocols. He collaborates with neurosurgical groups in Germany and presents at EANS annual meetings.

Dr. Nikolić speaks Serbian and English and sees international patients for neurosurgical consultations and second opinions. The Military Medical Academy provides English-language consultation reports. Video consultations are available for MRI review and pre-operative planning.
