Dr. Pierre Lucas

Dr. Pierre Lucas is a family medicine physician based at Anse Boileau Health Centre, one of the Seychelles' network of community health centres serving the southern and western districts of Mahé island. Unlike Seychelles Hospital in Victoria, which manages acute and specialist care, the island's community health centres provide the first point of contact for most Seychellois patients and are the backbone of the national primary care system. Dr. Lucas has spent 16 years at Anse Boileau Health Centre, building a practice that covers the full lifespan — from well-baby checks and childhood illness through reproductive health, chronic disease management in adults, and geriatric primary care. He trained at the University of the West Indies, giving him a perspective shaped by another small island health system, and has supplemented his training with a Diploma in Family Medicine from UNISA. He is trilingual in English, French, and Seychellois Creole, enabling him to communicate naturally with all patients from the southern Mahé communities. Dr. Lucas's family medicine practice at Anse Boileau Health Centre covers all aspects of community primary care. His chronic disease management workload is substantial — he maintains a panel of hypertensive and diabetic patients on regular follow-up, monitoring blood pressure control, HbA1c, renal function, and cardiovascular risk. He manages asthma and COPD with inhaler therapy and monitors respiratory function. He provides antenatal care for uncomplicated pregnancies, referring high-risk cases to Seychelles Hospital. He performs well-baby examinations, childhood vaccination, and developmental assessments. He manages acute presentations including respiratory tract infections, urinary tract infections, skin conditions, and musculoskeletal pain. He collects cervical smears as part of the national cervical cancer screening programme and provides mental health support for patients with anxiety and depression within the primary care setting.

Dr. Lucas has contributed to the Seychelles Ministry of Health's community-based NCD monitoring programme, providing chronic disease audit data from Anse Boileau Health Centre. He has participated in national assessments of primary care quality and patient access in the Seychelles, and his centre has been involved in WHO-supported evaluations of the island's health centre network effectiveness. He has contributed to patient education material development for diabetes and hypertension self-management used across the Seychelles health centre network.
