Prof. Lim Wei Kiat

Prof. Lim Wei Kiat is a Professor of Neurology at the National Neuroscience Institute (NNI) Singapore, the region's leading centre for brain, spine, and nerve disorders. He has dedicated over 25 years to advancing neurological care in Singapore and the broader Asia Pacific region.

After completing his medical degree and specialist training in Singapore, Prof. Lim undertook research fellowships at the University of Edinburgh and University College London, where he developed expertise in stroke neurology and movement disorders. He returned to Singapore to help establish the NNI's stroke unit and has since built a nationally recognized clinical program.

Prof. Lim holds a PhD from the National University of Singapore and is an active researcher, having contributed to international multicenter stroke trials and studies on Parkinson's disease in Asian populations. He is frequently invited as a keynote speaker at regional and international neurology conferences.

His patient care philosophy centers on translating the latest evidence into individualized treatment strategies, with a strong emphasis on rehabilitation and long-term quality of life. He is well regarded for his compassionate, thorough approach to patients with complex chronic neurological conditions.

Prof. Lim Wei Kiat graduated with an MBBS from the National University of Singapore's Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine. He completed his postgraduate training and obtained Membership of the Royal College of Physicians (MRCP, UK). He is a Fellow of the Academy of Medicine Singapore (FAMS) in Neurology.

He completed research fellowships at the University of Edinburgh Centre for Clinical Brain Sciences and at the Institute of Neurology, University College London (UCL). He was awarded his PhD in Neuroscience from the National University of Singapore.

Prof. Lim has held academic appointments at both the National University of Singapore and Duke-NUS Medical School, where he supervises postgraduate neurology trainees and contributes to the medical curriculum.

Prof. Lim's clinical expertise spans the full spectrum of neurological disorders, with particular depth in acute stroke management and movement disorders. He leads the NNI's stroke thrombolysis program and is experienced in administering intravenous tissue plasminogen activator (IV tPA) and coordinating mechanical thrombectomy for acute ischaemic stroke.

In movement disorders, he manages patients with Parkinson's disease, essential tremor, dystonia, and atypical parkinsonian syndromes. He conducts assessments for deep brain stimulation (DBS) candidacy and collaborates closely with neurosurgical colleagues on DBS implantation programs.

Additional areas of expertise include epilepsy management, multiple sclerosis (including disease-modifying therapy selection), and neuro-oncology consultations for brain tumour patients requiring neurological input.

Prof. Lim has published over 80 peer-reviewed papers in journals including Brain, Stroke, and the Journal of Neurology, Neurosurgery and Psychiatry. His research has contributed to international stroke management guidelines and clinical trials comparing thrombectomy approaches in large vessel occlusion stroke.

He has been principal investigator on Singapore-based arms of multinational Parkinson's disease registries, providing valuable data on phenotypic differences in Asian patients. Prof. Lim has received research funding from the National Medical Research Council of Singapore and the Singapore Brain Research Institute.

Prof. Lim regularly sees international patients at NNI Singapore, particularly those from Indonesia, Malaysia, India, and Myanmar seeking expert neurology second opinions or access to treatments not available in their home countries.

He consults in English, Mandarin, and basic Malay, and his administrative team provides support for medical report translation and international patient coordination. Video consultations are available for second opinions, review of imaging reports, and non-emergency neurological assessments.
