Dr. Pradeep Jayawardena

Dr. Pradeep Jayawardena is a senior consultant cardiologist at Nawaloka Hospital in Colombo, one of Sri Lanka's largest and most established private hospitals. With 17 years of clinical experience, he is recognized as one of Colombo's experienced interventional cardiologists, providing a range of cardiac services to both Sri Lankan and international patients.

Dr. Jayawardena trained at the University of Colombo Faculty of Medicine before completing his MD in Cardiology through the Postgraduate Institute of Medicine (PGIM) Sri Lanka. He also obtained Membership of the Royal College of Physicians (MRCP, UK) and has completed training in interventional cardiology in the United Kingdom and India.

His practice at Nawaloka Hospital covers diagnostic and interventional cardiology, echocardiography, and comprehensive cardiovascular risk management. Sri Lanka has a significant burden of rheumatic heart disease — a condition much less common in high-income countries — and Dr. Jayawardena has particular experience managing this condition alongside contemporary coronary and structural heart disease.

He is committed to preventive cardiology and runs cardiovascular risk factor screening clinics at Nawaloka, targeting the growing prevalence of diabetes, hypertension, and dyslipidaemia in Sri Lanka's urbanizing population.

Dr. Jayawardena earned his MBBS from the University of Colombo Faculty of Medicine. He completed his MD in Cardiology at the Postgraduate Institute of Medicine (PGIM) Sri Lanka and obtained MRCP (UK).

He completed advanced interventional cardiology training in the United Kingdom and undertook additional training in cardiac imaging and structural heart disease at institutions in India. He is an accredited cardiologist with the Cardiac Society of Sri Lanka.

Dr. Jayawardena performs coronary angiography and percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) for coronary artery disease. He has a particular interest in rheumatic heart disease — including rheumatic mitral and aortic stenosis — where he provides echocardiographic assessment, balloon valvuloplasty coordination, and medical management.

His general cardiology practice covers heart failure, atrial fibrillation (including anticoagulation management), hypertensive heart disease, and pericardial disease. He performs transthoracic echocardiography and stress echocardiography, and implants pacemakers for bradyarrhythmia.

Preventive cardiology consultations including lipid management, diabetes-related cardiovascular risk, and lifestyle modification form an important part of his outpatient practice.

Dr. Jayawardena has contributed to the Ceylon Medical Journal and has presented at the Cardiac Society of Sri Lanka Annual Scientific Sessions. His clinical interests include the burden of rheumatic heart disease in Sri Lanka and outcomes of PCI in the Sri Lankan population.

He contributes to continuing medical education for cardiologists and general practitioners in Sri Lanka through Cardiac Society programs and Nawaloka Hospital's clinical education activities.

Dr. Jayawardena sees international patients at Nawaloka Hospital, which has English-speaking staff and an international patient department. He consults in Sinhala, English, and Tamil.

Sri Lanka attracts medical tourists from the Maldives, parts of India, and diaspora communities for private specialist care. Video consultations are available for cardiac second opinions and pre-procedural case reviews. Nawaloka Hospital provides cost estimates and coordination support for international patients.

Dr. Jayawardena has been recognized by Nawaloka Hospital for clinical excellence in cardiology. He is an active member of the Cardiac Society of Sri Lanka and contributes to its continuing education and scientific programs.
