Prof. Chen Wei-liang

Prof. Chen Wei-liang is a Professor of Cardiology at National Taiwan University Hospital (NTUH) — Taiwan's premier academic medical centre and consistently ranked among Asia's top hospitals. With 25 years of clinical and academic experience, he is one of Taiwan's leading interventional cardiologists, internationally recognised for his work in structural heart disease and complex coronary intervention.

Prof. Chen trained at National Taiwan University before completing postdoctoral research and interventional cardiology fellowship training in the United States and Europe. Taiwan's cardiac catheterization and structural heart programs operate at world-class standards, and Prof. Chen has been central to developing NTUH's TAVI and transcatheter mitral intervention programs.

Taiwan's National Health Insurance system — widely regarded as one of the world's most comprehensive — provides extensive cardiac care coverage, and NTUH's cardiology department manages one of Asia's highest volumes of complex coronary and structural procedures. International patients, particularly from Southeast Asia and overseas Taiwanese communities, travel to NTUH specifically for access to Prof. Chen's expertise in structural heart disease.

Prof. Chen earned his MD and PhD from National Taiwan University College of Medicine. He completed his cardiology fellowship at NTUH and undertook advanced interventional and structural heart disease training at leading centres in the USA and Germany. He is board-certified in Cardiovascular Medicine by the Taiwan Society of Cardiology.

Prof. Chen's expertise spans complex PCI including chronic total occlusion recanalization, bifurcation stenting, and left main coronary intervention, as well as structural heart procedures including TAVI for severe aortic stenosis, transcatheter mitral repair, and left atrial appendage closure. He uses intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) and optical coherence tomography (OCT) routinely to optimize interventional outcomes.

His general cardiology practice covers heart failure, acute coronary syndromes, atrial fibrillation, and comprehensive cardiac imaging including echocardiography and cardiac CT.

Prof. Chen has authored over 130 publications in journals including JACC Cardiovascular Interventions, EuroIntervention, and Circulation. He has been principal investigator on Taiwan-based arms of international structural heart trials and has contributed to Asia-Pacific registries for TAVI outcomes. He is an editorial board member of the Journal of the Chinese Medical Association and serves on the Taiwan Society of Cardiology's guidelines committee.

Prof. Chen sees international patients at NTUH's international patient centre, consulting in Mandarin, Taiwanese, and English.
