Dr. Bülent Özdemir

Dr. Bülent Özdemir is a professor of neurology and specialist in demyelinating diseases at Memorial Hospital in Istanbul. He is among Turkey's most recognized authorities on multiple sclerosis and neuroimmunological conditions, with 22 years of dedicated MS practice that has helped establish Memorial Hospital as a regional center for MS care accessible to patients from the Balkans, Middle East, and Central Asia.

Turkey has a significant MS patient population, and Memorial Hospital's neurology department manages one of the largest MS clinic cohorts in the country. Dr. Özdemir has been at the forefront of introducing high-efficacy disease-modifying therapies to Turkish patients and is experienced in managing the immunological monitoring and risk stratification required for natalizumab, ocrelizumab, cladribine, and alemtuzumab treatment.

Beyond MS, Dr. Özdemir manages the full spectrum of neuroimmunological disorders including neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD), autoimmune encephalitis (anti-NMDA receptor, LGI1, CASPR2 antibodies), and myasthenia gravis. He runs a dedicated chronic headache and migraine clinic, offering botulinum toxin for chronic migraine, CGRP monoclonal antibody therapy, and multidisciplinary headache management.

His academic role at Memorial Hospital includes mentoring neurology residents and contributing to Turkey's national MS registry. He is fluent in Turkish and English and is experienced with international patients who visit Istanbul for neurological second opinions.

Dr. Özdemir completed his MD at Marmara University Faculty of Medicine in Istanbul and undertook Neurology residency at Istanbul University-Cerrahpasa Faculty of Medicine. He completed a Neuroimmunology and MS Fellowship at the University of Göttingen, Germany, under one of Europe's leading MS research programs. He holds a PhD in Neuroscience from Istanbul University focusing on neuroinflammation. He is a Fellow of the European Academy of Neurology (FEAN) and an active member of ECTRIMS (European Committee for Treatment and Research in Multiple Sclerosis) and the Turkish Neurological Society. He holds a Professorship at Memorial Bahçelievler Medical School.

Dr. Özdemir's neurological practice centers on MS and autoimmune neurological disease. He manages the full spectrum of MS subtypes — relapsing-remitting, secondary progressive, and primary progressive — prescribing and monitoring all classes of disease-modifying therapies including platform injectables, oral agents (dimethyl fumarate, teriflunomide, fingolimod), and high-efficacy infusion therapies (natalizumab, ocrelizumab, alemtuzumab, cladribine). For NMOSD, he uses AQP4 and MOG antibody testing to guide diagnosis and manages anti-IL-6 and anti-CD19 biologic therapies. In headache medicine, he performs occipital nerve blocks, botulinum toxin for chronic migraine, and prescribes CGRP pathway inhibitors. He performs and interprets lumbar puncture with CSF oligoclonal banding, EEG, and EMG.

Dr. Özdemir has published in Multiple Sclerosis Journal, Journal of Neurology, and Neurological Sciences on MS disease-modifying therapy outcomes in Turkish patients, NMOSD in the Turkish population, and headache epidemiology. He participates in the Turkish MS registry and European MS platform studies through ECTRIMS. He is a faculty member at the annual ECTRIMS conference and the Turkish Neurological Society national congress.

Memorial Hospital is a JCI-accredited hospital with an established international patient program. Dr. Özdemir receives neurological second-opinion requests from patients across the Balkans, Middle East, and Central Asia, particularly for complex MS cases and autoimmune encephalitis. He consults in Turkish and English. Video consultations are available for MS medication reviews, second opinions on diagnosis, and follow-up monitoring for international patients who cannot travel frequently to Istanbul.

Dr. Özdemir is the recipient of the Turkish Neurological Society Young Investigator Award and has received research grants from the Multiple Sclerosis International Federation.
